Miles, Engine Hours, Idle Hours and MPG

I was looking at my Engine Hours and Idle Hours yesterday and was just curious how I compare to others. I've added my total miles, total engine hours, total idle hours and total MPG (via trip B, which I never reset). If interested, add yours and let's compare.

Mine is a 350, Fx4, CC, LWB with 3.55 E-lock axle.

Total Miles: 8,190
Engine Hours: 279 (29.35 miles per engine hour)
Idle Hours: 64 (23% of Engine Hours)
Total MPG: 13.0

27983 miles
737 hours (37.96 avg. MPH)
166 idle hours (22.6% of engine hours)

22427 miles towing, mixed between 5 trailers. (80% of truck miles)

MPG varies widely, mostly 10 - 18, depending on what I'm doing.

As I type this I'm sitting in a hotel room in Memphis and I have approx. 1100 miles to drive before the end of the week at which time I will be home.

Wow, you guys idle a lot!

I'll post my numbers when I get the chance. My truck has been parked for over a week, and it's way too cold outside to run down there just for this...

I was thinking my idle hours were high and that was the reason for the post. I use the remote start most of the time, and I'm wondering if I should back off on that a bit. I'll still use it, but not so much in advance. I don't want to start another MPG thread, but I thought adding that may show some correlation between idle hours, average speed and mpg. Even without getting into everyone's towing, not towing and other details it may show why some are getting much higher mpg's if their idle hours and avg speed are above the average.

I like to see the stats that others have. I added the towing miles just for kicks since I just passed the 6 month anniversary of driving this great truck.

I hope more people write in.

A minute or two at startup, a minute or less at shut down.
A traffic light here, a stop sign there.
I had not checked this in awhile but it seems to adds up quickly and I'm not sure how especially since I only have 10 total hours of high idle since mile 4 (I keep up with it using the built in timer).
I obviously idle more than I realize.

I really don't think 25% idle time is that big of a deal when you consider the time it takes to hook/unhook a trailer, inspect the lights/tires all around, load unload luggage/passengers, stop lights, warm up time, cool down time, fiddling with the GPS/Phone/iPod, talking on the phone at times, checking in at hotels/campgrounds.

The list goes on and on. I bet a good chunk of idle time is spent on GPS searching/routing for those of us with the factory nav unit. Also, I try not to drive until my oil temp is above 80º. Just makes me comfortable.

Wow, ditto!

I'm thinkin' having the backup camera has/will cut my idle time in trailer hookup, and I've only used the remote start a few times (never had that feature before, so I forget about it). I idle a minute or two at most before driving, and a few minutes before shut-down after long high speed runs. Depends on how hard I think I was pushing the engine at the time. Not as long as I idled before shut-down with my 6.0 though.

My numbers:

F350 SRW SC SB Lariat FX4, 3.55 e-locker, delivered 9 Aug 2010

13,358 miles

310 engine hours (43.09 miles per engine hour)

45 idle hours (14.5% of engine hours)

17.9 MPG overall

I drive a lot of highway miles, hence the relatively high MPEH number, not a lot of towing yet, but a lot (85% of the total mileage) of relatively heavy loads in the bed (generally 2000 to 3000 LBS), and frequent climbs to 4000' to 7000' elevations (from 1200' mean at home). I'm also in a much milder winter climate than most of you (TGFT) and maybe a tad hotter during the summer.

Heck, I’m more conscientious about idling this truck than I have been with previous gasoline engines. I'm hot natured so I'll be the first to admit I'll waste a little fuel to keep the cab cool in the southern high humidity summer climate. You hear that, EPA?
This is the first vehicle I’ve owned with an engine hour monitor, too.
