I'm using Firefox 3.6 and to get the pop-ups to stop I had to go into Tools/Options/Content and remove a pop-up blocker exception for FTE to get the pop up ad's to stop. This same menu can be found in Linux by going to Edit/Preferences/Content and finding the same thing.
I think you can add your exception back for FTE if you add the filters ctubutis and me added. Don't want to have to limit your experience here at FTE because of spammer scum...
I've been running IE9 on Windows 7 Ultimate X64. I have not had the pop ups people are describing...nor do I have the pop up blocker making any sounds...
And I have this website on my screen all day, every day. But I am running it in the 64-bit edition of IE9. Been good to thus far.
I'm running win 7 x64 as well, but IE8. The only thing I get is the bleeps from the popup blocker. No notice of a blocked popup, just the bleeps. Happens everytime I click any link within FTE, as well as when I close the page or exit this site.
I gotta admit, the annoyance is minor, but still keeps me from reading all the threads I would typically check out, so it is possible that a question I know the answer to is totally overlooked, due to me getting annoyed at the issue and leaving the section/site.
I should have stated at the beginning that I was running OS X 10.6, and browsing with Safari. Viruses, while not non-existent for the Mac are highly unlikely. And the pop up blocker worked immediately.
I guess I am just lucky that Apple didn't make the sucker make a noise or little banner up at the top notifying you of an attempted pop-up.
It doesn't make sense that this is driven by javascript in the ads, when the page my browser loads does not have ads in it. I suppose the code is still there, just hidden by my membership...
Thanks to all for the multitude of replies and info, I am sad that this is affecting so many users of this site, hopefully it can be fixed...

Agreed. Since this first started happening I've kept away for the most part. I'm running Firefox 3.6 and just removed the exception for FTE on my pop-up blocker as desperado mentioned. Hopefully that works or I'll be gone till things get straightened out.
