white smoke and died. no start

Ok newb here but not new to diesel trucks. I have a 2008 PSD with a DPF/cat delete and Spartan 275hp tune. I was driving down the highway and noticed my "drain water seperator" light come on. I pulled over to drain it and the lever was broke off the water seperater. I turned around to go home and the truck was chugging and blowing white grey smoke. It was a sevear amount of smoke. I pulled over to get it towed and it died. I got it home on a tow truck drained the entire fuel system tank and all. I Installed new filters from Napa and primed the fuel system. I have the "wrench" light on and no start. I have cycled the key on for 30 to 40 sec x'6, 8, 10 ,30 times. I have fuel with no air out of the bleeder/shrader valve and 25 gallons of fresh diesel in the tank. I have also checked the fuel safety switch in tha passenger side door. I have fully charged batteries and the truck is in a warm (30 to 40deg) garage. The day this all happened it was -5 deg and very cold. I had just fueled so i figured i just got some bad diesel hence the draining of the tank and cheap filter change just to get it started. I will be putting motorcraft filters in once i get it running. any help would be great. Thanks guys

You need to read the codes on it somehow. At 30 degrees, there still could be ice in the fuel system. If you were not running OEM filters when this happened, the possibility exists that some water got in the HPFP. If that happened, you likely don't want to know what is wrong with your truck.

it had factory filters at the time. Maybe not factory filters but it was the filters that came in the truck from the Ford dealer where i bought it. I purchased the truck with 32,001 and it now has 40,200 miles.

How many miles were on the OEM filters when the incident happened? Were they FD-4609 filters or the updated FD-4617s?

I purchased the truck from a Ford dealer with 32,001 miles. it now has 40,200 miles with an extended warrenty until 80,000mi. the filters that came out of it dont have either of the numbers you just mentioned. the water sep filter is a 58230-10-ff1097 and the upper is a 1840821c1 APR 05 07 32534

The numbers you have mean nothing to me. Maybe someone else will have an idea. The filters installed at the factory had identifiers so that a dealer might identify that they had never been changed. I'm thinking it was a paint dot on the filter itself but perhaps someone who remembers wll chime in here.

I'm guessing, and this is only a guess, that your filters had too many miles on them when the incident happened - unless you had changed them since you got the truck or have service records to indicate when they were changed.

Ok. I dont know if they were changed. When I got the truck the dealer had it for 3 days doing a service. Im not sure what all they did but they would not let me take possesion of the truck until they serviced it. The truck came in from another dealer on a wednesday and they called me to pick it up on a Saturday. they said it had to be checked out and serviced. I will call them monday.

Good luck and please let us know what you learn. This seems to be a pretty common occourance with the 6.4. You can do some research on the forum for more info but it seems like a couple folks had the same problem and were able to drain and clean and restart with no immediate damage. However, there were a couple others who damaged the fuel system big time. Hope you get it started or get them to honor the extended warranty. Was the tuner/delete on the truck when you bought it from a ford dealer? If it was sold to you that way the dealer will have a lot of incentive to repair it, I think. I suggest you save those filters. Not sure how much good they will do you but maybe there is a way to prove they were in the truck when you bought it. Hope it all works out for you.

Come to think of it, I do recognize where one of your filters came from. 1840821C1 is an International number. That should be OK as that is an International engine. It does mean, however, that the filters were likely not changed as a set. That, in my mind, raises cautions about the quality of service your truck may have received in the past.

I agree Larry. I figured they had taken care of this stuff when they did the service. I have only put 8,000 miles on the truck. It was a 1 owner truck from Ohio and i am located in Indiana. I went to my dealer to find the truck and they located it for me and dealer traded it. Wish me luck..

Very good chance they wont do anything....you were tuned and deleted your DPF they will notice all the fresh wrench marks, and will see you have accessed the computer , not to mention the black soot in your tail pipe..

I hope for your sake you have a great relationship with your dealer...

What model is your truck? There are some faults where F-250 and F-350 will set the MIL and F-450 and F-550 will set the wrench. And there are some where all models will set the wrench as yours has. P2291 will set the wrench -injector control pressure too low, engine cranking.

I'd find a way to read the codes or have them read. I bought my code reader from O'Reilly's.

Factory Fuel Filters will have an FF on the bottom of them.

Take your air box off and check there as well. See if a little more air while cranking will help.
