Ah...thanks for the clarification. I was not 100% sure. When I called, I simply said there was a Jeep conversion for toploaders, something like a T-175 or something, he seemed to know exactly what I was talking about. He said it works great on toploaders they work with, but he was not sure on anything else.
Also, to clarify, this was not the same David Kee I spoke with before, I believe this to be a tech. The David Kee I spoke with before was EXTREMELY helpful, and willing to help me find what I needed. It just so happened I already had what I needed, I just needed to look. Not to mention, when I called before I spoke with an older gent...this was a younger guy.
Anyways...if anyone has a mid 60's toploader they want to part ways with for a reasonable price, please let me know. I don't have a lot of cash, but I can sell stuff.

I have a Jeep top-shifter - does anyone within walking distance of Erie, PA have a worn out SMOD that they would like to donate to the search for truth and Justice?

This question has been around for a long time - Unless someone steps up and invests some time or money there will be no definitive answer.

The covers are the same between SMOD and toploaders. Same bolt holes, same size, same gasket. The only difference between the two is the tailshaft housing, the case casting difference, and the gears...from what I have been told and seen. My only point of concern would be internal clearance with the gears since the forks all go to the same places. I am about 90% positive it would work just fine...but until I can find an affordable Jeep setup it will remain 90%!!!
If you look at the internals comparitively, they are extremely close, the main difference being the gear sizes which shouldn't cause a problem since the SMOD's gears are smaller in size. As far as other differences...I am not aware of any. I have ran this conversion by a few old school transmission gents here in town, and they all collectively say if it don't work, we can make it work...which was not exactly the vote of confidence I was looking for but I will take!
Hopefully this weekend at the swap meet I can score a Jeep cover assy...or someone on here with one relatively inexpensive? Keep in mind this conversion would open hot rodders in general to another 6+ years worth of good shifting strong transmissions that can be found for cheap. Otherwise in my humble opinion, they can be cumbersome with the stock FoMoCo shifters.

I started looking into this further, as I have a '66 Bronco 3 sp. toploader 4x4, that I'd like to put a top shifter on, and I think a T90 from an early Scout might work. Also I have a '74 3 sp. 2wd for the same reason. Anyway, just thought I'd throw that out there.
I PM'd a couple on the HAMB that have the SRM article from 1990 that featured this top cover swap.... waiting reply.

First, welcome newbie!
Second, you may want to mock everything in there to see where your shifter needs to be. In the case of my F-1, stock style shifters would not work without major cab modifications, which was not high on my list of priorities. You may end up having to get a universal style 4-speed shifter and calculate lengths of your shift linkage to work. Typically the shifters were mounted further back on the tail shaft, in my case it came out under the bench. I lucked out and found a shifter for a van that bolts up to my case instead of the tail shaft. I am not sure if something like that would work for you or not. I am still looking for a Hurst style shifter to replace my sloppy FoMoCo shifter. People joke that my truck shifts more like a Kenworth than a Ford!
