Horrible sound at idle

So one of our company trucks (f-superduty 97' auto) is making a horrible racket at idle, as soon as you start taking off or rev the engine the noise goes away. Sometimes when you put the truck in gear the noise stops. I thought I read about a cracked flywheel making lots of racket so we brought it to our fav trans shop and they pulled the trans and said it wasn't trans related and it wasn't the flywheel. Suggested the turbo. I don't think it is but it's what my boss was told. Just saying if my turbo was making that kind of noise I'd be intimidated. I should be able to check the turbo by the intake and feel for slack right?
Anything else that would make a sound kinda a like a bad waterpump but louder?

Yes you can ckech the turbo by the intake. Ill pull the belt and check any of the pulleys that has the motor including the water pump, and see. Another possibility colud be the down pipe, a little loose and touching the cab. just a guess.

defiantly check the idler pulleys, mine was making a horrible racket and it turned out to be the smooth surfaced idler pulley. Loosened the mount bolt and all the ball bearings fell out

Yea I guess you right on that. Kinda thought the name was interchangeable, but I would certainly not call a flywheel on a manual a flexplate!

they have fex plates, they warp or crack for what ever reason sometimes and can do exactly what your disccribing. pull the inspection plate and spin by hand and see what it looks like!
