I finally said the hell with it, took my antron 99 down, never set up a home station again.
It was fun there for awhile, seeing how far you can reach out, but then they wanted to doctor thier systems and slam everyone with echo and BS.
Echo, roger beeps, and illegal amps have all but ruined CB in this country. What was once a cheap and fun way to stay connected with other people from the community and people out on the road has turned into a huge pissing contest. It's a shame really.

My son has a really nice mic made by Turner. I think it's called the Road Talker. It has a really nice feel to it--much better than the mic that comes with the Cobra. I like the Phillipines made 29 better than the Chinese made ones, but the Chinese made ones are nice too. Cobra's got a new one out now that has a completely different design. It's called the 29 LX LE. Nice rig.

I have a smaller 40 channel Cobra CB that I mounted to my ceiling. I ran the wire for the antenna threw the roof liner and threw the gasket of the rear cargo light. I have a cheap magnetic antenna and this thing works great. I've seen them brand new at stores like wal-mart for 30-40 dollars. The ones with the weather channel are about 60 dollars. Mine doesn't have that. I'll post a picture of mine where it's mounted:

JV,
How is your bracket mounted to the ceiling? I want to modify my bracket so all I have to do is back off the mounting ***** on the radio and slide it out. (Done it before.) But, what is anchoring the bracket?

I used some 1/4" self tapping screws and it holds the bracket fine. I use the Cobra 29 bracket which is wide but my cheapo radioshack radio will fit in there as well and what I did is use a stock thumb screw on one side and a longer bolt from the hardware store to go through the other side and make up for the space. Its still mounted solid. I used to go off roading with the truck and the CB never came down. The way it sits though I had to fold up a paper towel and stick it on top to sort of angle the radio itself down a bit but it isnt noticeable.

Id show you some pics but I dont have any and my truck is parked at the moment. 9mpg is too hard on the wallet...

I actually made my own bracket since mine "Disappeared" lol. I mounted it using self tapping screws. the roof is actually 2 layered, which means it didn't poke threw the top layer. I think I put washers on it since the screws were kinda long. Oh, and the screws go right threw the headliner, I only cut holes for the wiring.

So it's actually the felt/board/inner full skin/outer roof skin. My '75 F-100 had felt/board/singlebeam back to front/outer skin.
Just don't want to mount a bracket and have it rain on my parade...

The thing you need to be careful of with mounting a radio on the roof of your ride is that it's really gonna hurt if you get into an accident and smash your head against the radio. Well, if it doesn't kill you it will really hurt. The bottom part under the ashtray is a good place to mount the radio where it will be reachable and out of the way at the same time. Are you mounting it on your 96?

Yes, It's headliner/first layer/top layer (outside roof) and it doesn't leak at all and is mounted solid. in the center of the ceiling it drops about a 1/2 an inch where wires for original lights and stuff run. It's very easy!

Something else you could do is mount the radio to the floor with a pedestal mount. I had a '79 with a 4 speed stickshift I set up that way. It came out pretty nice.

Thanks Rico, (and others) for the info. Got my radio back from the doctors, and weighing options for the mounting. Trans hump is out, (5 speed) and grandaughter. Front of seat is out, (Cupholder) Dash is out...Will sleep on the ceiling mount and look it over.
Thanks again for the helpful information. Will be back.

Being on the roof, it's never gotten in my way. I've never hit my head on it once, even leaning to the compartment

Go off the road into a ditch not wearing a seatbelt and the radio becomes a widowmaker. I knew a fella that happened to, and he was in Jeep with a padded rollbar. He hit the corner of the radio with the top of head. You can imagine the rest.

Anyway, pedestal mounts cost about $15 and the radio can be mounted to the right of the shifter where it won't be in the way. They are designed in such a way that they can be turned to pretty much any position you want. I know everyone has their preferences, but mounting a radio where you guys are talking about mounting it is not a place I'd mount one. Here is a link to what I am talking about. Hope it helps.
