05 6.0 erratic fuel gauge triggering Check Engine Light?

Odd situation here. My dads 05 f250 6.0 PSD.
He says he'll take off in the morning and the fuel gauge will randomly drop to empty and trigger the low fuel light, but then also the Check Engine Light will come on.
My brother did a code scan and no codes come up.
Anyone have an idea where we should be looking to remedy this one?
Thanks,
Mike

Do a computer reset and see if that clears it up first.

Pull the fuses and relays, and clean the ones that power that circuit.

Next.. look for a bad connection to the tank sensor ($$$).

I just wanted to bump this back up. Problem still occurring.
Can someone verify if the fuel gauge circuit is capable of triggering a check engine light?
Thanks

bad fuel sending unit in tank or connection like gear said--6.0 injectors are fired off fuel pressure --bad sending unit/connection--sends signal to pcm no fuel, so it is anticipating a loss of fuel pressure and attempting to make you aware--truck runs fine right?

Yes, truck runs fine. And no codes are pulled.
I am suspecting it is the sending unit myself. He just filled the tank and the gauge went straight to empty.
What kind of a project is it to get at the sending unit in those trucks?
Thanks for the input

The exact same thing happened to my 06 F250 turbo diesel at 30k miles. It was out of warranty (over 3 years). Took it to the dealer, raised a stink, and they fixed it for free. It was the fuel sender.

it's not bad to drop the tank when empty ,, if it's full consider raising the bed

as far as the cel I think it's something else or if related it's an electrical issue like a bad ground

you should run out of fuel fefore the cel wil light

If the sender is acting whacky, could it trigger the light by giving a signal as if it is out of fuel?

What light? The CEL or the "fuel low" light? Do we even have a "fuel low" light? If it's the CEL, I'm pretty sure mine went on when the fuel sender was acting up.

the sender would trigger the low fuel on the info panel not a CEL light on the Dash

Both, it triggers the low fuel light, followed by a check engine. But when scanned no codes are coming up.
