back tires grinding on f250

Just for clarification, I've got to start off by asking: you already know that there is something seriously wrong with the truck, but you're going to drive it anyway by limping it around in 4wd?
Next question: The transmission went out, but you can drive it in 4Hi? 4wd doesn't create a top secret power transfer routing that allows you to harness the engine power direct to the front axle. The engine power still has to go through the transmission, and is then distributed through the transfer case to the front axle. I've had a clutch get burnt to the point where the only way I could drive the truck was in 4Lo & redline, and it would just barely drag itself around the shop. But I've never had a transmission "go out", and still be driveable in 4Hi.
Between your two posts though, I'm looking at these things: back wheels locking up & making a grinding sound and the truck only moves in 4Hi (assume 4Lo too)? I'd say it sounds a lot more like you've shelled out your rear axle than had the transmission "go out". Exploded the carrier, broke the cross pin, ran it without grease & seized a bearing or two, something like that. Pop your diff cover and start looking there.

Maybe something in the transfercase but the rearend is real easy to check first. Either pull the cover off the rear end and get a good look or maybe take the drive shaftoff and see if you still have problem. Another maybe would be your parking brake sticking or something goofy like that. hard to say without being there.
