Bad MPG's

I have been getting 10 to 12 miles per gallon for the last couple months, doesn't seem to matter how I drive it. This summer I was getting about 18. So I was wondering if the winterized fuel is giving the terrible mileage or if my fuel system is to blame(IP, injectors). I have noticed some loss in performance, now running down the highway it will pull up to 4lbs of boost on a straight and it never used to. Only going up hill. I also turned fuel up two flats and increased the timing a hair with no change in mileage. I want my mpg's back diesel goes through the roof in price.

I swear I was pulling in 16-17 this summer, now its mid 14... I blame the winter fuel as well. Not happy about it as I've been putting on more miles the past two months as well

winter fuel is a major hit!
bad thing is,it's not reduced in price!
i dropped my max speed to 40mph,just enough to stay comfortably in OD.
it's the only thing that has made it bearable.
when plowing, forget it though.im just talking my normal operations.

.........your not alone.

im doing a job right now i can walk too! im loving it lol!
good sized job too.oh thank the maker!
on the other side of the coin,i just had to replace a $450 starter in my diesel chipper.
lol.it's always something boys.

So does everyone agree it's the fuel? Is there anyway to really know if the ip or injectors are getting weak?

Hmmm I noticed a drop in my mileage here also, last tank that I got 17mpg on was filled Nov 11, since then every tank I have gotten between 13-15..

What is the difference in Winter fuel that makes it 10-15% less efficient?

i took a 5 mpg hit in the 02 powerstroke since they started overcharging us for that "winterized" crap.

I think its the kerosene (#1 diesel) that gets added to reduce the temperature at which the fuel gels. This thinner fuel has less BTU's than the #2 diesel that is used in the summer time.
There are likely other additives in the picture as well.

Related info: The owners manuals for VW MK1 Diesels (original Rabbit, Jetta and Pickup) tells owners that diesel can be blended with kerosene or gasoline to increase the fluidity of the fuel during the winter. Engine output is decreased, and the blend should be no more than 20-30% to prevent damage. This is from a 1980 manual. The 1.6L IDI is similar in many regards to our 7.3L in terms of simplicity and operation. Just much smaller...

what id like to know from the long term idi runners is; if adding a gallon of oil per tank helps bring the BTU's back up without causing any issues?

I cant say if oil brings up the BTU, but I run a quart of tcw3 2 stroke oil every tank and it seems to run smoother and make good power. Not sure if we get winterized fuel here in Oregon.
