Does anyone know if my E99 would have a chipped key, or can I just go anywhere and get a spare key.

You can just go anywhere and get a spare. PATS wasn't until later and on Excursions.

I have three vehicles that I wanted spares for and was told when I went to get a spare key made that they were all 'chiped' and I needed to go to a Dealer. I said "make me one from a 'blank' to where I can at least open the doors"..... Low and behold ALL of the 'blanks' that I made started each vehicle that it was made for.

Yup chipped keys came later - if you do have one (our Exc does) be prepared to have your wallet "lightened" - we were quoted 450 for a new key for our Jetta TDI from the VW dealer.
