Opinion on New Tires Please

I have an FX4 with the 20" rims and it has come time to replace the factory Pirelli's that came with my truck. Since I was never really impressed with Pirelli's tires, I am looking to get something different. Any suggestions? I am looking at Kumho Road Venture AT KL78 (On-/Off-Road All-Terrain) and Goodyear Wrangler SilentArmor (On-/Off-Road All-Terrain).

Been doing alot of research on tires also since I'm not too far from needing a new set myself. The last set I bought was Michlens and right now I've got 75000 miles on them and they sould last well into summer. They are a high dollar tire but well worth it if you're gonna run alot of miles and get you're money out of them. Personelly I'mthinking of going with Hancook or Bridgestones the next time since I've allready got 165000 miles on my truck and not running up the milage likeI used to.

I do not know much about either of those tires specifically, but I had Goodyear Wranglers on my '97 when I bought it and they were absolute CRAP. The factory Pirelli's that came on my 20's were worthless also. I went with Nitto Terra Grapplers personally. They are great on the highway, even better than the Pirelli's and are decent off road as long as it is not too sloppy. I hunt frequently and have only had an issue with the Nitto's once.......too much rain in 24 hrs for the tires in mid thigh deep ruts....Another story for another day.

Search the forums here since tires are like bourbon.....everyone has their opinion on what is best. My Nitto's were about $1000.00 installed and balanced but that was $400.00 less than BFG AT's.

Unfortunately 20 inch tires are expensive but they look good. Mine are 275/65/20's with a level lit. They are also 10 ply tires. They make either 6 or 8 ply also that fit these trucks for less money.

Good luck in your search.....

I'll second the Nitto terra Grapplers made by Toyo, I'm running the LT 275 70 18 10 plies on an F150 S/C ; smooth rolling, quiet, grippy on hard surfaces, good snow and mud traction, I need 600# in the box to improve ice grip but won't sacrifice the mileage. I'm coming off a factory set of Wranglers. No comparison, imho. I've also run BFG AT KO's and prefer the Nittos over both.
With tires, you get what you pay for.

I am also looking to put new tires on my 2006 FX4 with 20" rims to replace the factory Pirrelli's. I am probably going to go with the Pro Comp AT sized 275/60R20. I had these tires on a Jeep Cherokee and they were great on and off road and I really liked their look. My favorite AT tire are the BFG All-Terrain KO's, but I have heard mixed reviews on their tread life. The Pro Comps have a 50,000 mile tread warranty.

BF Goodrich All terrains!! An easy 80k mile tire with the ability to do anything and go anywhere!! The Nittos are awesome too but have some slop in the snow. BFGAT's are the perfect blend of on/off road ability. Just my .02

I was running 34" Toyo Open Country MTs on my old truck an they were GREAT!! Right now I've got 33" Copper Discovery STTs an they are a pretty awesome tire too. I don't know what kinda driving you do but I do some off roading but they were/are my daily driver too. I commute a hour to work one way so a tire that doesn't wear easy is a must but can also handle anything I throw at it, being snow or mud here. I gotta say all around both sets are awesome and I would buy either again.

I have an 06 Screw 4x4 Lariat with factory 20's. I just placed an order for the Cooper Zeon LTZ's. My friend runs a tire shop and recommended these. I ordered 305/50/R20's. I'm hoping they don't rub too bad. He says he has been installing 305's on stock f150's and doesn't have any problems. I really like the look of the Cooper LTZ's and the price was very reasonable. I had Kumho tires (not the KL78's) and had some problems keeping them balanced after they had some miles on them. Hope this helps.

I just replaced my tires on the factory 20"s.
Decided to go with Michelin LTX M/S2 in a 275/60/20. No level needed, and they fill out the wheel wells nicely.
Here's a pic taken the week I put them on, the week of Christmas.

They are a bit pricey, but they come with Michelin's 70k mile treadwear warranty. They roll smoothly, and have excellent traction in the snow and ice we've been getting here in Virginia. If they can fit into your budget, I highly recommend them. They will handle most any mild off roading (fire and hunting trails, sand, some very light mud).

Echo on the Michelin's. My top priority has always been "the safety of my family." Won't drive on anything else.

Just went threw the painful belabored process myself and came up with the Michelin LTX AT2. I really had decided on the Nitto Terra Grapplers, but they were not available in the timeframe I needed, and I have had great luck with Micheling thus far. I just installed them on 12/23/10, and they are are impressive thus far. Been through two snows, but no mud yet. I drive mostly on the highway, but wanted a decent off road capability as well. The ride is awsome. Impressed so far. Got mine for a little less than $1000 installed on sale at Discount Tire (actually on sale elsehwere and they beat the price at DT).

Replaced the Wrangler Silent Armors. They were great in all departments EXCEPT highway ride. Could never get them smooth at ~70mph. I lot of folks love them, but I decided to try something else.

I run Nitto Terra Grapplers and I love them. A good tire on, off, and in snow or rain. Much better then the Factory Goodyears I took off last summer.

The Michelin are a nice tire too they just didn't give me enough traction for the kind of work I do and the places I go.

BFG's for me

I've had about 5 sets of BFG/ATKO's on a couple different vehicles, and never had a prob. No road noise, and they clean pretty well in the snow. My truck has about 30K on this set, and I'd say they are about 70% to the good treadwise. I paid about 900 for this set, balanced, free rotations, and flat repairs. (Havent had a flat yet).
