1987 F150 xlt lariat manual transmission

I just bought this truck about a week ago.. the price was defintely right and I am happy with the truck so far. But it is very low geared in the transmission and at 60 mph I am at about 3 grand on the tach. some of this could just be because it needs a tuneup.. which I will be doing this weekend, but a friend of mine suggested that short of swapping out the tranny which I don't want to do, the power I have with the curent one will come in handy this summer, I could install an electric overdrive onto the end of the current one. I was wondering what this would consist of and how it would work, Ie would I just have a switch to flip, would I have to flip it every time I came to a stop ect. How hard it would be to install.. I know I would have to built a mount most likely and shorten my drive line. how would this affect my rear end, could it cause problems down the road with it.? I've never really heard of adding an overdrive aftermarket, and have only had 2 vehicles with overdrive actually and they were both automatic

Welcome to the forum ripjames.

There's nothing wrong with your truck except it's gearing for what you want it to do.

Yeah, you could add an electric overdrive (like a gearvendors).... for $2000+, and that would buy a lot of fuel.

The ZF-5 will net you about a 20% reduction in RPM's at highway speed, but you need it all from the flywheel to the crossmember.

If you have a 2wd truck probably the most economical solution would be to swap out your 4.10 ring and pinion for something in the 3.05-3.55 range.
You'd still have plenty of power and then be able to use first too.
