I am deflated
Getting close to being in the the market for a F150 SuperCrew in this year range but am disappointed about the mileage I am hearing about.
I am used to 21-22 average for mixed mileage (75% highway/25% city) in my extended cab S10 / 4 cyl. Hearing that yall are receiving 12-15 mpg is a significant reduction.... I need the extra space but....
I was thinking it would be 15 - 18 mixed and probably could justify that. My Excursion with a v10 gets 12 in the city.
Any thoughts? Am I misreading the info.

Those are the numbers for most of us. Some of the kids are getting 8 from hammering on the throttle and some of the older guys are getting 18-20 but they are driving very gentle.
Basically you are looking at a very different pick up than what you currently have. There is a 6 cylinder option out there but I'm not sure if it came in a crew model

My 5.4L powered FX4 SuperCrew gets an overall average of 13.2mpg with that being mostly city. 16ish on the hwy and 12 in town. I don't baby it.

Thanks guys, I know it is not much of a question.
Was just looking at the Nissan Frontier Crew Cab with a V6 Automatic and it gets all of 1 MPG better than the F150 SuperCrew according to the EPA estimates with similar years. With that one comparison, may as well get what I want. A Ford.
Going to check out the Silverado. I am not thinking there is anything that is going to be much closer to 20 mpg until we get into the newest of trucks that have more of the fuel economy advancements.

Matt,
The biggest factor in these trucks, and many of the other makers, is the transmission. Until 2008, 2009, etc pretty much everyone was still using a 4speed trans. The 6spd in the new trucks really does help put the power down in a much more efficient manner. A 2009 5.4L gets about 1.5mpg better than a 2008 5.4L and the only difference is the trans. 6spd trans also allows for a shorter rear gear since the trans is a little taller.
Either way you cut it, it's a 5,500lbs+ truck (Mine's closer to 5900lbs) and it wasn't bought to be efficient

Thanks, I am noticing the transmission changes in newer models, trouble is that my budget just won't put me into something that new.
As I look it appears that the difference between the small trucks in 4 door like Nissan Frontier or Chevy Colorado are just 1-2 mpg better as well. I surely am not going to get one of those just for that increase. Need to check the Toyota. Really don't want foreign though.

The Tundra is a gas hog...likely 12 all day long city or highway. Space is plentiful in that CrewMax cab but it's not a better truck.
Honestly, there's a reason the F150 has been the top or damn close to the top in sales all these years...it's the best all around truck. It's not the fastest, may now tow the most (04-08), may not have the highest payload, may not be the most fuel efficient....it's just the best at doing ALL of those without sacrificing anything major in either of those categories. Buy the F150...you won't regret it.

Thanks, you are right, it is showing 17 MPG (EPA) for the 4 door Tacoma V6. Not enough to sway me that way and they tend to be priced about the same as the F150 in a smaller truck... I really do use the truck bed as well. I don't tow much but use the bed more than the average Joe with a pretty F150..
There is a price difference of course with the Frontier or Colorado in that they are about 20-30% less than the F150. I have heard alot of bad things about the Colorado I5 engine so likely won't go that way.

I average 15.8 miles a gallon with all the stuff included in my signature...A long time ago (7yrs ago) when all I had was a programmer, intake, and exhaust I was getting 18 city 20 highway... I didn't baby it, but I didn't ever try to break the tires loose at a stop light either... If you are looking for an 04-06 make sure the plugs have been changed...they should be before or at 100k....sometimes they can be a bit....."stuck" lol... but not impossible to get out..
Tires are 35x13 Nittos, the font is kinda hard to read.

The Tacoma is marginally better, but the backseat is a joke - the Double Cab Tacoma is the same back seat used in their compact car...the Corolla.

I'm waiting for the 34 MPG Volkswagen Amarok. The almost full-size truck is built in Brazil.

You don't say what type of use you want a truck for. If you're in an S-10 that you want to replace I assume you don't do any heavy towing or hauling. I have a 2wd SuperCab with the 4.6 engine and I regularly get 17-18 mpg mixed driving. Something like that would give you an upgrade in size and capacity without much difference in mileage.

Chevy guys might tell you they get higher, in my experience people I know that drive gm tend to over estimate their mileage. A supercrew 4X4 with a 5.4 will average about 12.5 or 13. That is pretty much it. But fact is all fullsize trucks that are similarly equipped and similar years will get about the same.

When I got my S10 truck new in '99, I did not have any kids and only planned to have a few. Over the years, it would be no exaggeration that I have filled the back of my truck hundreds of times with everything from furniture purchased on CR, to dirt, to brush, blocks, bee hives, etc. I really USE the bed of my truck. The S10 4 cyl / 5 speed has worked hard for me and I have pushed it to the beyond its limits many times. A few times, I worried I was going to break the axle or something else. Only towed a small trailer a few times. I have a V10 Excursion I can tow with...
The difference today is that I have 7 children. I don't want to give up the truck function but need more room and the small 4 doors such as the Colorado or Frontier have a even smaller bed. I can put 4 kids in mine now but 3 of those seats are not considered safe. All of my kids are 13yrs old and under. Over the last few years the need for the additional seating in a 2nd vehicle has increased and it is continuing to increase.
Additionally, I have always wanted a F150 and have always liked the Supercrew. I would consider a supercab but it seems that the extra leg room and space for childrens car seats will be helpful.
Thanks for asking
