1978 F800 391, not charging. I’ve never seen an alternator hooked up like this. Is the wire connecting to the - battery post supposed to be connected like that? Thanks.
There's no reason it CAN'T be hooked up, but it might be a band-aid from a bad ground. Check out the engine ground(s), and the frame-to-body grounds.
On the other hand, is it working, and do all the lights and accessories work like they should?
All, or most of the electrical works. I only get 12v +/- when the engines running no matter the rpm. I was hoping it was just installed incorrectly but look like it’s probably bad.
Well, it's certainly not original... if you're going to replace it, I bet there's a more modern choice that might fit better and not need a castle nut as a spacer
