Need Help..Fan Shroud 78 F250 4x4 SuperCab

1978 F250 SuperCab 4x4. Originally had a 400. Now has a 460w/auto. Standard radiator. I've done a lot of searching here and have come up with 2 likely part numbers. D3TZ8146D/D4TA-CA (or CB) and D7TZ8146A/D7TA-AA

I'm hoping someone here can point me in the right direction. What if any are the differences between the two shrouds I have listed? If neither one is correct, what do I need?

Thanks for any help!

D3TZ8146D / Marked: D4TA-CA (or CB) / 1973/79 F100/350 460 / Use w/all radiators-except-there is another used 1973/74 only with Standard Cooling, see below.

D7TZ8146A / Marked: D7TA-AA / 1977/79 F100/350 400 / Use w/Standard, Xtra Cooling and A/C radiators, not used w/Super Cooling radiator.

The Super Cooling radiator is higher (24 11/16" vs 19 3/4") than used the Standard, Xtra Cooling and A/C radiators, so its fan shroud is larger.

But, all 1975/79 F100/350 460's came from the factory w/the Super Cooling Radiator.

1973/74's came with one or the other.

Marked: The ID (not the part) number is moulded into the shroud at the upper left (drivers) side corner.

D3TZ8146C .. Fan Shroud / Marked: D3TA-CA / Fits: 1973/74 F100/350 w/Standard Cooling radiator only.

All these shrouds are obsolete. It may be possible to find the one you want NOS. If interested...I can search for it.

OK, but I'm a little confused. I've been told that the radiator in my truck is what would have originally been in it when it had the original 400. Not the higher super cooling. So, do I need one to fit the 400 or do I use one meant for a 460. As far as I know, the 78 Supercabs never came with a 460. And yes, if you could help me locate one, I'd appreciate it very much.

Two radiators (and shrouds) were available for your 400 truck. The optional Super Cooling radiator, or the standard equipment Standard/Xtra Cooling/A/C radiator.

The Super Cooling radiator's top tank is huge, much wider and deeper than the other. The core is also thicker and the radiator is 24 11/16" high.

What shroud do you have now? Look on the upper left corner for its ID number, post what it is. That will ID what radiator you have.

460's were optional for all 1973/79 F100/350 2WD's, except 1978/79 F100/150's sold new in CA (due to CA emissions laws).

My problem is, I have no shroud now The po for some reason left it off. I never expected that finding the correct one would be such a challenge. I stopped at a local radiator shop in the hopes that they might have some shrouds (they didn't) but they said that the rad in there now was a 3 row that would have been the standard one with the original 400. Definitely not the much higher super cooler. If I understand you correctly, since mine is a 4x4, the 460 was not an option that year? The vin plate says it originally had a 400.

The 460 was not an option with 4WD until 1983, and then it only available in F350's.

You could not get a 460 with a manual trans until 1983, either.

The most likely reason you have no fan shroud: It broke, the PO couldn't find the correct replacement.

OEM fan shrouds were only available from FoMoCo dealers until recently. Some have now been reproduced, are sold by repop sellers that specialize in Ford vehicles.

You've installed a 460, but left the original 400 radiator in place, correct? So...unless you install a S/C radiator, you need the 400 shroud that'll match your 400 non S/C radiator.

D7TZ8146A has been repopped by Dennis Carpenter $200.00 (800-476-9653) / I found 72 NOS originals at FoMoCo Dealers (it was just obsoleted), but the last MSRP was $279.13 (!).

Dealer net cost was $167.48. It's possible you may be able to buy it for this price, but I'd rather not have to type all the sources that have it. If you want the info, P/M me your phone number.

Just so you know, LMC lists a replacement shroud also.
LMC p/n 43-2834 Shroud, D7TA-AA $99.95 (D7TZ-8146-A that Bill was refering to)

I think you need 25 posts before you can PM or post pictures, or become a supporter (paid membership).
BTW welcome to FTE.

HAHAHA that's good to know. I spent close to an hour last night looking for the "send a PM" button !

Are the shrouds available from LMC original Ford parts, or imported copies?

Where are you located Pete?
I did a 460 swap and used the radiator that was in the donor truck along with the the 460 and my shroud wouldnt work on the bigger rad. The donor had no shroud. Anyways Ive got the original rad and shroud that was with my 400 that I have no use for. I dont know how much it would cost to ship the shroud but you could have it if you are interested.

Gotta be imported when you consider that...

LMC is selling their shroud for $99.95. The last dealer net cost price for the Ford shroud was $167.48, so LMC's shroud is not genuine Ford.

I agree, with LMC its probably gonna be an import.
I'll have to admit though, thats not always the case. I ordered an exhaust heat riser valve and the plastic center medallions for the steel spoked wheels and was fully expecting to get cheap Chinese crap. I was pleasantly surprised when I got the package. The heat riser was Ford NOS still in the original package and the medallions were Dennis Carpenter repro's.

There's a Ford obsolete parts vendor in Lenexa KS, where LMC is located. I wonder if they own NOS PARTS SOURCE?

Carpenter has the 2nd largest stock of obsolete parts on the planet, but usually, none are listed as such in his repro parts catalogs.

Carpenter has a special arrangement with FoMoCo, buys tons of obsolete parts direct from them, so what you see in his repro parts catalogs...could be genuine Ford parts.

btw: Those hubcap medallions were not available from Ford, they were only furnished with the hubcaps used on styled steel/aluminum wheels.

DC reproduces all sorts of stuff like this, then 'invents' Ford part numbers for them.
