2005 5.4 blowing smoke on startup

Hello everyone:

I have a 2005 F-150 with the 5.4 L engine. The truck has 70,000 miles and uses almost 2 quarts beween 5000 mile oil changes. I have always perfomed the oil changes at 5000 mile intervals using MC 5W20 oil. The truck s used to commute to work, and sometimes used to pull a small utility trailer with lawn equipment.

The truck blows blue smoke at startup after sitting for several hours. It has done this since it was virtually brand new. While under warranty, the valve seals were replaced. The smoking stopped until this summer.

I've spoken to Ford and they sounded like they might help, but I imagine that replacing the seals is very expensive should Ford choose not to help.

Are there any additives I can use to remedy the problem, or should I consider switching to 5W30 in hopes of easing the problem.

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Additives will not work regardless of the advertizing. The problem is most likely bad valve guides which allowed the valves to rock in the bores wearing out the seals. There are tools for doing the seals in the truck but the guides will require removing the heads and that is fairly a major job.

Thanks, Moto Mel, for your input. I'll just continue to take care of the truck and hope that I don't experience some of the other problems with the 5.4 that I have read about on this forum.

Talk with your dealer after checking for TSBs regarding the valve guides excessive wear. If they only applied a BandAid to an open wound, so to speak, they may have to do the repair properly at no cost to you. It's worth a try.
