Hey guys i have a question. I am thinking about getting a 90' 7.3 deisel truck with a bad transmission, however I have an 88' with a 5.8 gas with a good trans. I want to know if you can take a transmission off a gas motor and put it on a deisel?
If it matters the gas is auto the deisel is manual.
No you can`t. Bolt patterns are different. The trans in the diesel is probably a ZF5 so you could look out for a good diesel one to replace it.
If you want auto then maybe look for a C6 from a diesel.
Gas to Diesel trans swap answer is yes and no. The 5.8 you have has the wrong bellhousing pattern as stated above. I know as I accidentally bought one off the 5.8 motor. The 7.5 gas engine has the same bellhousing pattern as the 7.3 diesel engine so these two will interchange.
About the 5.8 to the 7.3, yes. For the 7.5 to the 7.3 I am going off of what others who have done a trans swap have told me. They stated that they took the trans from a 7.3 and mounted it to a 7.5 when converting from auto to manual.
Guys, this comes up all the time in the IDI forum (pre-powerstroke)
Diesel and 460 are similar but DIFFERENT bolt patterns. There is one guy that said he redrilled one to fit in the other, but I don't remember the specifics, search in the IDI forum and you'll find the answer.
Again, they are NOT a bolt in swap. Also the gear ratios are different in the gas vs diesel ZF.
