should i buy this 66 fordf100 custom cab? please help!

hey guys. you guys are all the best when it comes to tellin me if its a good deal. so since i was 13 i had a dream of owning a 61-66 ford f100. my grandpa had one and i was in love. i am now 16 and its time for my first truck. i am very good with mechanical things. can pretty much do anything/problem solve whatever on a dirtbike or go kart type of thing. and know tons of these about these big block engines and the carbs in these. i can pretty much teach myself much of it. but anyway are these trucks complicated to fix? or pretty simple? ive got family that is very good with cars. also are these trucks pretty dependable? good for gettin to school and work?

anyways this is the truck im lookin at. i love it but not sure on the price. what do you guys think? good deal? what would this be worth?
1966 Ford F100 Custom cab

also i know its not good, but what would the gas mileage be around with this truck/engine? thanks guys!

They are very easy to fix. Especially if you're a self-starter. There's nothing this forum can't help you get the hang of. There are even some guys in the PDX area that might help you scout out the new ride. The most complicated thing you'll find is rust (which being in Phoenix, there are plenty of specimens to choose from that aren't rusted out.

You'll want to make safety upgrades. Some guys disagree with me on this one, but I vote for disc brakes in the front and some 3 point seat belts. All of these are simple upgrades that have been discussed on this forum. Also, learning to drive without power steering is a challenge if you have puny arms. There's a fix for that too. Good luck and whatever slick you buy, we can help you make it what you want.

That truck is nice, but for here in AZ the price is a bit high... 4000 would be a good deal for that truck. I agree with bluestang... Disc upgrade is a must especially in metro phoenix traffic. power steering is great to have. IF this truck has those things already, yeah maybe 5000 is a decent price to pay. there are plenty of trucks in AZ to choose from. expect 10 to 12 MPG at best with a 352

And Welcome to FTE!

Back in the late 80's I had a 66 F100 Custom Cab with the 352 and 3 speed overdrive. It was my everyday driver and a great truck, wish I still had it. In stock form, 2 barrel and single exhaust, it got about 10 MPG. I put small tube headers on it, dual 2 1/4" exhaust, an S code intake, a Holley 600, and re-curved the distributor . After that, it got 14 MPG average.

this means you will be building ARM strenght with that little steering wheel

If you get that truck i have a set of disc brake spindles to convert it to disc brakes.

Unless you can get a personal loan, you won't find a bank to lend on a truck this old. The truck has been on craigslist for some time and I saw it listed for 4000. See if you can get him to go to 3500. Looks to be in really good condition from the pics.

I would try to chew him down more...the steering column has either been swapped out or just painted in the red which isnt original...nor are the red arm rests..they all should be the tan/fawn color.
Wheels look like they might have some kind of offset spacers too.

Armstrong steering is no big deal...especially for a younger person...builds character and gets ya in good shape...manual brakes...no biggy...if you keep your foot out of the throttle theres no problem...also using the clutch to slow it down before using the brakes helps alot too...
Pricewise...its a nice looking truck, but to tweak the few things that appears needing as the rest looks original in the pics that are posted I would definitely try to go lower...do be scared if he says nope...if he has had it for sale for a long time...which at that price prolly has as these trucks are not in short supply in the NW, he will be sitting n it for a while. If its the first truck you have looked at...look at others...ones closer you can go see and sit in and so on. At any age 4 or 5K is a lot of money...but at 16 thats the world pretty much. Dont be in any rush to spend it or go into debt, whichever your situation is.
Ease of repairs...since you sound like you are mechanically inclined...they are gravy...a huge reason why they are so popular as well as ease of locating the basic repair parts...brakes, etc...

I'd look under the truck for any rust issues first. Check the front of the bed floor also. If that checks out take it for a test drive to see if you can live without power steering, brakes. The manual steering is not bad as long as your moving while you turn the steering wheel and run at least 35psi in the front tires. Keep the brakes in good condition and they perform fine. Rear axle ratio will determine fuel economy, but like has been said 12-18 mpg is the range. From the pics IMHO that steering wheel would have to go.
