EFI 302 Swap To Carb 351W

I would like to build a carbed 351W and replace my EFI 302 with it.

My truck is a 1985 Ford F-150...

What would I have to do for the swap?

I would like to swap in a C6 too, I just need the tranny and driveshaft right?

Keep the AOD if you can for the fuel milage, put a shift kit in it and it'll be fine.

You'll need the complete 351 of course with an intake, distributor and oilpan, those parts won't transfer from a 302. And you'll need to bypass or remove the high pressure fuel pump and install a regulator near the carb, and wire in an ignition box like a duraspark or aftermarket. You will also need a 28oz flexplate for whatever trans you use, but the motor will otherwise bolt in on the same engine mounts.

if you have an original carbed 351. I'd go with the mech. fuel pump. "had to many regulators fail" just pull the sending unit out of the tank measure
and remove the elect. pump. clean and extend the pickup tube. crimp off the return line, reinstall. I went with the HEI dist. 1 wire hookup. all the power for the efi comes from the drivers inner fender. then you can just snip the entire efi harness at the firewall and pull the computer from under the dash. find your gauge sending unit wires and keep them seperate. loose the aod and go with the c6. the aod is controlled by the computer and will not function corectly if you go carbed. other than the trans, this is the set up on my 85 Bronco and it is running great. don't make the dumb mistake I did on the pcv system. as the efi valve covers need a pcv valve drilled into the left side.
I still can't believe I forgot that on mine!

On a 1985? Are you sure? I thought the AODE was a 90's thing.

no, I am not 100% sure. it may be a 90's thing, but should be easy to tell by the amount of wires going to the tranny.

The AOD was never computer controlled and this truck predates all electronic trannys anyway, so using this trans is as easy as installing a bracket for the TV cable.

I just went to a local junkyard, and when I get some extra money I will be getting a complete 351W out of a 1986 F-250! He only wants $200.00 for it.

Why not stay efi? you can still swap in a 5.8.

At least get a 351 roller block, and preferably an entire engine with a roller cam.

exactly. get a complete efi 5.8. reuse your current efi 5.0 harness and run a 5.8/C6 computer and your done.

why mess with efi? I have run both. my 85 Bronco got 8 to 10 mpg with efi. now gets 20 mpg with 500 cfm carb (600 was a fuzz rich and only 12 to 14 mpg with it). running a 302, 4" torker intake, 3:55 gears, a 4 spd manual, and 31-10.50's. I agree with the roller motor, I am running a 91 in mine. much smoother and very responsive. I do understand efi, but why double the expence for less results?

You got 8-10mpg with an EFI 302? You must have had the O2 sensor disconnected or something because that's not normal, it should do at least 15mpg average in a reg cab pickup or bronco.

Putting an EFI 5.8 in this truck may be more work than going carbed though, a stock 351 for this year would have been carbed so there is no plug and play 5.8 computer, a later computer could be used but it will require some pin swaps at the EEC connector.

I'm not gonna stay with EFI, I like Carbs better.

Whats a good 4bbl intake for the 351W?

Edelbrock or Weiand stealth intakes are both good for the 351W. Also, if you retain the
AOD rather than going to a C6, be advised to pay very careful attention to the AOD TV
cable hookup. It is critical to the well being of the AOD and will lead to transmission
failure if not done right.

Alright. I'm gonna keep the AOD for gas mileage! I'm just gonna have the weak spots upgraded and rebuilt.

Y'all really think I should get a roller 351W? What are the advantages?

Not sure on what Cam or carb to go with.. I was thinking a Holley Street Avenger 670...or perhaps a Edelbrock. What carb has makes the most power? I have also heard that the Edelbrocks are easier to tune.

Should I get a Edelbrock Performer or the Performer RPM?
