OK GUYS FINALLY GOT THE ENGINE DONE. THIS IS A 1986 BRONCO 4X4 HAD A FI 302. DID AWAY WITH THAT AND PUT THE EDELBROCK TOP END KIT WHICH INCLUDES ALUMINUM HEADS,MATCHED INTAKE AND CAM WITH THE EDELBROCK 1806 (I THINK) BUT ANY WAYS INSTALLED NEW HEADERS ,WITH EXHAUSTALL THE WAY TO THE BACK. HAD TO BUILD NEW BRACKETS FOR THROTTLE AND TRANS KICKDOWN BEING THAT THEY ARE CABLE OPERATED.EVERYTHING WORKED GREAT UNTIL I TOOK IT FOR THE FIRST RUN AND THAT IS WHEN I NOTICED SOMETHING WAS BAD WRONG. AS SOON AS I PULLED OUT ON THE ROAD IT HAD NO POWER AND HAD SHIFTED INTO HIGH GEAR JUST GOING DOWN THE DRIVEWAY WHICH IS ABOUT 200 YARDS . SO I STOPPED ON THE ROAD AND TRIED IT AGAIN TAKES OFF OK AT ABOUT 1/4 THROTTLE BUT AS SOON AS IT SHIFTS INTO 2ND IT DOESNT STOP SHIFTING UNTIL IT GETS INTO HIGH GEAR. IS THIS THING COMPUTER CONTROLLED OR WHAT? ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT.
Ok, what transmission are we dealing with? It could be as simple as reconnecting a vacuum line to the shift regulator. However if your 86 has an AOD then you have a throttle valve cable that needs to not only be connected to the throttle assembly but it also needs to be calibrated to shift the transmission properly. This presents an interesting dilemma since you no longer have the same throttle assembly that you did with the EFI.
well i was worried bout that. but there has to be a way to make ot work. but i geuss i dont understand how this cable works i did measure the travel of the the throttle on the efi plenum and on the carb and it is very close within a 1/8 of an inch. and thought i had it set back pretty close but i geuss i was wrong..
The AOD is a overdrive-equipped 4-speed auto that needs the throttle valve cable connected and calibrated to shift properly. However, without the mounting that the cable had with the EFI throttle body, I am unaware of any method of doing so without fabricating some way of holding it to the throttle linkage on the carburetor. The AOD was available in trucks that were originally carburated but I don't know what components specifically needed would be to do the conversion.
I SEE. I DID MOUNT IT IN THE ORIGINAL BRACKET AND MOUNTED IT TO THE INTAKE, AND THE CARB HAS A SPOT FOR THE CABLE TO HOOK UP TO WITH THE EDELBROCK SUPPLIED HARDWARE. SO I GEUSS IT NEEDS TO GO TO A TRANS SHOP TO BE RECALIBRATED? I WOULD THINK THERE IS SOME RULE OF THUMB TO SETTING IT UP.
There is and if the carb you have has the mounting hardware there is a method for resetting it. I just don't know what it is. You might do a search here or a direct internet search for the procedure. Its not difficult as I recall but again, I don't the know particulars on resetting it.
WELL AFTER SOME LOOKING AND GETTIN MY HANDS ON A CHILTON I GOT EVERYTHING ADJUSTED OUT. THE MANUAL TELLS YOU JUST HOW TO DO IT. ALL IS GOOD BRONCO IS BACK ON THE ROAD. NOT REALLY A PROBLEM JUST NEED TO KNOW THAT WHEN YOU GO FROM EFI TO CARB MAKE SURE YOU MEASURE THE TRAVEL AND DISTANCE OF THE THROTTLE AND TV CABLE(real glad i did) AND IT IS NOT A PROBLEM! BRONCO RUNS GOOD JUST HAS TOO MUCH GEAR!!! I MEAN IN HIGH GEAR IT WILL BARLEY PULL ITSELF BUT THE FIRST THREE GEARS ARE PRETTY FUN. WITH A LITTLE RATIO CHANGE I THINK IT WILL FUN TO DRIVE.. THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP!!!IF ANY ONE IS LOOKING FOR EFI SET UP OFF THIS PROJECT I HAVE PRETTY MUCH ALL YOU NEED AND IT ALL HAS LESS THAN 125K ON IT.
it is a 302 5.0 litre and we used the stock block bored .030 ordered the flex plate for the stock engine. upgrades include edelbrock aluminum heads(which you have to change to go to carb) air gap intake,1806 carb, performer roller cam with lifters and p tubes. long tube headers and new exhaust system.
