i have a 79 f150 4x4 ranger reg.cab long bed and i am wanting to to a restoration of the whole truck i was wondering if yall could tell me how much trouble it was
any experiences and knowledge off restoring a truck like mine
I stripped one truck, although it was a 2wd, down to the frame in about 8 hours. I had one guy helping, then two more dropped by to help lift off the box and the cab.
Rusty bolts are the biggest problem, but Mr Impact fixed them
Now putting it back together.....not quite raedy for that yet as I am starting to get "carried away" as my wife puts it
I am currently putting back together a 79 2wd long box. This is a complete frame up restoration. Currently have only drivetrain in the frame it will be worth it after it is all done!
Right on the money Torque1st.
My project started out as swapping a 69's body on to a 73's frame for PS and PB etc.
Then I needed a better rad support. So I found a donor with a practically new one for $200 Cdn.
I drove it home and it had a sweet running I6/C6 combo....
So I figured with the price of gas going up maybe it was time to swap out the 390FE.....
Then I figured what the heck paint the frame and the engine......
Now it is maybe I should paint the body pieces individually ...........
My wife says I have gotten carried away as it was supposed to be a remove the old body put on the new one over a weekend. Been almost 2 months now
Arent projects great
Whatever you do, keep track of your bolts and nuts. I must have wasted hours putting my truck back together because I did not mark what bolt went were. Lots of trips to the boneyard looking for little bolts and misc parts. Very time consuming.
Don't do it unless you're commited. Eric is right, lots of problems come up. I love my truck but financially it would have made more sense to buy early to mid 90's truck. The newest 73-79 is 24 years old, old trucks require more attention tgo keep on the road.
If you're looking to do it because you love the truck and you like messing w/vehicles, go ahead. If your looking to do it just to have something to drive or to save you the cost of buying something newer, don't do it.
thanks for all the help guys
i got this truck for something to do and i wanted to have to pull it all apart and put it back together
i will try to remeber all of yalls ideas and information when i go to pulling stuff apart
i just pulled it in the shop this evening so maybe tommorrow i will start pulling it apart
is there anything special to watch out for when i got to pull the cab off
Here's my tip. If you don't have one, spend the money and buy a digital camera before you start. Then take LOTS of pictures as you take stuff apart. It's a HUGE help to look at a picture later instead of relying on your memory.
I'll second the digital camera..My 69 crew has been apart a
good year now, and if i went by memory the truck would be
missing something..I took photos of everything as it came apart
at 2 to 3 different angles, i then get them all into the computer
and burn them to cd to have. So far i have a library of cd's
like frame, cab, wiring etc....It'll make it easier when i finally get
the old girl together.
hope this helps
