i'm a new guy to the forum. i bought my 99 4.2 5sp 4x2 3.55 new early '99. i think mine is also the only Sport pkg without a tach! i never got better than 16mpg until it hit 50,000 miles, now i'm getting 18.5 mpg at best with 83,000 miles. just curious about other "trailer tow package" (yah, sure!) owners are getting with 255's and 3.55's. and yes, i think the diesel exhaust tune is kinda trick.
on a second note, does bleeding the slave cylinder really help shifting this turd of a tranny? i changed trans fluid to mobil 1 synthetic and it still shifts way hard, or not at all sitting at a light that just turned green with cars behind me laying on the horn to get the hell out of the way. thanks, ford!
I have a 2000 w/ 255 tires and 3.55 rear end. I get 17.5 -19 on the interstate, depending on speed. (65 - 80 mph)
As far as shifting....the easiest trick for getting the transmission into 1st...is 2nd. Go there, then first. Other than that, just fuss and fiddle.
update-- now that it's been warmer out lately, i've been getting 20 to 22 mpg on the highway commute. i don't get why, because last summer i got 17 mpg. i can only guess that with almost 90k on the engine, it's loosening up a little. i'd rather be confused about inconsistencies like this than complain about them for now!
I have noticed that my 5spd tranny can be a little fuss muffin once in awhile. The trick though is to find a gear it will go in and then back to first, works every time for me. Plus when down shifting, don't try to force it into gear, just gently put pressure on it and in 2or 3 seconds it slides in like nothing. The 5 spd manual is made by Mazda, thats only 33.3% of Ford, blame Mazda more than you blame Ford!! LOL!!
I noticed some of you wishing you had a tac. Before inserting your keys press the odometer button and hold it while you start the truck. After the truck is fired up, release the odometer button and the display will now be in test mode. Subsequent short depressions of the odometer button will advance the display through the varrious test modes. I think the 4th or 5th display will get you to the "tac" display. It is a little hard to read the ones digit cuz it changes so rapidly, but its there if you realy want it. The display will return to normal after turning the truck off. No, it ain't as good as an analog display but what the heck.
As a side note, my wifes Grand Am has a tac and it is an automatic. Seems completely useless in an automatic.
I guess the first thing I shoud do is tell you that I don't deserve the credit for this helpful bit of information. I tried to do a search of my previous postings to find out exactly who deserves the credit but the server only returned 4 of my postings. So at the risk of possibly offending the true originator of this advice my best guess is that I heard it from Racerguy. I believe he may be a FTE moderator.
The display is only used for test so I dont believe any codes or settings can be changed through the odometer button. I have used it several times without any adverse effects and nothing changed. It won't do anything 'funky' to the computer. It will stay in the test mode until you take out your keys to shut the truck off. So every time you restart you will have to perform the procedure to obtain the test mode again.
Have fun

PS Server must be smokin' on a friday night, can't even get smilies.
I tried the Odometer trick on my truck ('99 F150 4.2 V6) I do have a tac but I wanted to see what the test mode gave me. It didn't work for me. anyone else?
I also tried the odometer trick on my 2000 F150 4.2 V6 and it didn't work for me either. I also want to say that y'all have a cool site and I'm proud to have joined it.

If you're thinking about putting a flowmaster exhaust system on your truck it can also be helpful as a tac... When the engine noise starts to get loud and raspy is right about 3000 RPM, which is the perfect shift point for 1st and 2nd gear...IMHO!
