91 Won't Start: No Fire Except When Turning Key Off!

I'm writing this for friend who doesn't have the money to fix his car,and not computer savy.

Trying to surprise him for Christmas.... hasn't run for months and family needs car for transportation during holidays.

Any ideas?

Can provide more info if you request...

Thanks for ANY help...

Perplexed.....

i'd start with the the doohicky you put the key in to start it, i can't remember the actual name of it. if that fails, proceed to hitting until it works.

I assume you mean to say you see a spark from the coil (or plug) when shutting the key off? But nothing when cranking the engine? If so all that means is the coil is getting +12V but nothing to tell it to "fire". The spark is from the field collapsing in the coil when battery voltage is removed.

The most common causes of a no spark condition are a bad Ignition Control Module (ICM), bad coil connections, bad coil and the ever famous bad Stator (PIP) in the distributor.

Start with the easy items first. Wiring, connections, etc.

Truck Won't Start:More To The Story! '91 F150,4.9L

Thanks for comment Ria....;other comment re beating it;feel like it sometime but owner loves truck too much!

Now,for the rest of the story.....

According to owner:

1. Oil pump failed
2 Sheared distributor gear
3. Lost ignition keys
4.Installed new distributor, new module and pickup
5. Tried to replace ignition switch
6. Broke it
7. Tried to use rod in steering column by pulling up and down to "simulate" ignition switch.
8. When rod pulled up, get spark at plug, push down;no spark.
9. Teeth on timing gear all good

Do you know where I can get a wiring diagram for this truck to help him analyze problem?

Sounds like a bad ignition switch, Have power to coil key in "run" position? and test for power to the coil key in "Start" position.

Brown-Pink wire out of the switch itself (start circuit), if no power in that wire key in "Start" position, replace the switch. ("Run" is the Red-light green wire)
