Correct, there should be a pigtail with a green/yellow-stripe wire in it in the
harness by the power brake booster.

there's a green/yellow-stripe wire for it down near the power brake booster:

I've seen some that retract pretty well and some that don't; if anybody ever opens one up to
clean & lube & whatever, post pics here of it.

IMHO modern flashlights are brighter with whiter light but these don't need extra batteries.
Should be $5-$20 in junkyards but there's some clueless guy on eBay trying to get $250 for
one:

Take a look at what else he is selling.....

Ha!!!!!!!! Twelve-hundred bucks he wants for factory training on an audio cassette tape!!!!!!!!!!

Cripe, for that price, you'd think he'd be selling ancient Mayan artifacts or something....

Me thinks the guy selling the $250 underhood light and $1250 tape owns a dodge.... gotta afford the repair bill!

Anyhow... is this what everyone means by the underhood tool box? Saw this in a 1982 Ford today, but didn't take it cause it's broken up.... Furthermore, unless I overlooked it, this is bolted right over the battery tray so where does the battery go? Does it use a tiny motorcycle battery?

She has always fixed her own vehicles, learned on a mercury capri (the 70's one). Doesn't care much for fords anymore though, unless it's a older <1959 or earlier car/truck. Some 60's/70's trucks she likes in the ford line

That is the tool box. It is supposed to be mounted on the driver side of the fender, so smoe one likely rigged it up to be in there. It actually comes in pretty handy. I wish it had been an option on the Diesels.

If the yard wasn't going to rip me on it, I would have taken it home cracked or not, it's a good reminder what to look for. First I thought it was a battery box, the Ford oval had jumped out at me when I scanned it. Then I noticed the tool box text on it

Maybe I should store some flammable white gas in it?

Any chance you have a better photo, maybe a video showing it lit up? I know it's a odd request, but there just isn't that much out there about these. If I could figure out how to hook it up to a power source (I'd try a battery, but I bet that would fry it) I'd see for myself how bright it is

They are made to run on 12 volts so you should be fine. I took one of these apart because the mercury switch stopped working and wired it up up a toggle switch. Even if it does not light up right off the bat, it could still be made to work. I thought I heard it is the mercury switch that is one of the big problems on these.

Yeah, I drilled them out and then used little bolts to put the halves back together.

Cool. i'll give that a try tommorrow. Curious what's all inside the unit

Do you know of a listing for all the features you could have for a say 85-86 (86 mainly) F250 or F350 diesel? The more fun stock options that can be had with it the better

Well now days with everyone doing everything behind wheel (cell phones, texting, eating, reading books, papers, shaving, makeup and the list goes on) except driving and paying attention it seems you need a set of train horns or better to get there attention.
