I was going to suggest this myself, as I must do it sometimes in my 2006

My 2006 isn't too bad for staying partially engaged after turning off, but growing up ALL of my late 80's - early 90's Ford's
had to backed up a few feet after disengagement

Thanks this helped me

I just locked my hubs in auto on my 06 and this same sound just came back. Didn't understand why. Thanks for the help.

If both front tires were "locked" then you would get that binding any time the hubs were locked, regardless of if it's in 4 or not.
Also I think the clunk sound is probably more of a heavy clicking than a clunk. Am I right handyman? What is going on is when the wheel is turned at it's max and the hubs are locked the u-joints are starting to bind causing a clicking sound. It's just another flaw in Fords design. This will happen anytime the hubs are locked, 4 engaged or not.

Worn u-joints? Ever grease them? Even when in 2 wheel drive with the hubs locked and front wheels turned to the max it is very possible you will hear a slight clunking....this is normal u-joint operation. Turning the wheels to the max puts more stress on the operating angle of the u joints. My u joints are brand new in the front axle...replaced them this summer when I did ball joints, when i lock the hubs and turn front wheels to the maximum, i here a slight clunking from the u joints turning at such an angle....it's just normal u joint operation.

Not to my knowledge, unless it came from the factory that way.... Which I doubt.
