203* Thermostat, this has me puzzled.

I read somewhere that a 203* thermostat will raise your EGTs. I have asked around because i just cant grasp the concept of coolant raising EGTs, can someone explain this to me?

I don't know about causing higher EGTs but it will cause higher oil temps. I removed the 203 and went back to a stock 195 on the suggestion of a well known tuner. Others have switched back as well.

I installed a 203 last July and I like it just fine. I can't see any way it could raise EGTs.

higher coolant temps cant Raise EGTs. I just cant see it, unless i am missing something. I can see Higher Oil temps, because i saw them during my live tuning, and i still need to change out my thermostat. Even with higher coolant temps, which leads to higher oil temps, im just not seeing higher EGTs.

i can't remember where i heard this from, but i thought you only needed to run a 203 was to make ELC more efficient.
i've also heard that the big International 7.3's run a 203 as well. i agree with the higher oil temps, but we can't be talking that much of a difference. i would think if you had higher EGT's after the 203 install then there might be something else amiss in the PSD.

The general consensus seems to be that a 203 is ok for a stock truck but the 195 is better if you have a tuner to help keep the oil temps lower. International designed the engines with a 203 t-stat and Ford put a 195 in it to lower nox emissions.

Some of us think it's ok for modified tuned engines too.

I was just about to post a new thread about this when I came upon this one. I just ordered the filtration system, 203 tstat and housing from bob @ dieselsite.

Friday I plan on draining and flushing my coolant to switch over to ELC. Now with the higher eng temp will there be any worry about overheating during the summer?? Is there any other downsides to this higher temp? I do have the truck chipped but it came with it when I bought it and I bearly use it. I mainly use the high idle setting then go back to stock. I dont race or anything its my daily driver.

Sorry for the hyjack.

Thanks,

-AJ

AJ, the downside to the 203* is it will increase your engine oil temps which is not good because it can break down the oil much quicker. Will not overheat as long as the thermostat works properly.

Been running a 203 t-stat for years now, don't fear it! I pull HEAVY, not a problem.

I've run the 203* for probably 4 years, every time I send a used oil sample to Blackstone at 10,000 miles they say it's ok to extend my OCI even farther.

Thats definitely good the reports are coming back good. I have run one for about 4 years myself, never had an issue, but when Jody live tuned my truck, it was an eye opener how high my EOTs got.

The thermostat regulates your engine's minimum operating temperature. The water pump and radiator regulate the maximum temp. Once the Tstat opens, they're all the same.

Its more or less accepted on faith that raising oil temps a few degrees is harmful to the oil. As you've seen in this very thread, the Blackstone reports don't validate this belief.

International wants a 203 Tstat in the T444e, Ford lowered the combustion chamber temps a few degrees (before the Tstat opens) to cut down on NOx emissions. That's all I need to know. I'd say install it and don't give it another thought. In fact, that's what I did.
