What would cause a previously functioning outlet to crap out?

No but I'm not convinced it's the cord. It's a 2 year old 12/3 Yellow Jacket cord that cost me around $50 when I bought it.

I have however thought that perhaps I should replace the female end from where it's been outside so long though. Might try that.

1. GFCI receptacles are known for failing, sometimes not long after installation. I'd at least replace that (or get the landlord to replace it).

2. As someone else touched on, GFCIs and circuit breakers perform two different functions. GFCIs monitor the current on the hot wire and compare it to the current on the neutral wire; they should be equal. When the difference hits a small value (5 mA, I think), the GFCI trips. Circuit breakers limit current so that the wiring between it and any terminations (receptacles, lights, etc) is protected from overheating and causing a fire. GFCIs = personal safety. Circuit breakers = wire safety.

The GFCI is the problem. It's not capable of allowing 1400 (prolly more with the resistance of the 50'cord) watts thru it for extended periods. Prolly over heats.

Thank you sir, that's probably the best idea I've heard yet. I replaced it with a regular outlet for the time being and it seems to be fine so far.
