Starting problems (not cold weather related)

Ok, Long story. I have a 99 ps. I have been having problems starting this for months and I finally got tired of it and tried to tackle it. Lets just say I am losing the battle.

It has taken about 45 minutes every morning to start the truck for a long time. I got new batteries, and it seems like that helped a little but still takes forever. In the last week I decided I wanted to fix it so it starts and runs like new. I replaced the GPR and the Gp's (took out old autolites and replaced with bosch). Charged the batteries and tried to start a few times. Nothing. Went to lunch and decided to try again. After a few cranks it started. It started spitting out weird black styrofoam looking pieces. After a minute or two the idle slowed down and it died. Im convinced this has nothing to do with the glow plug system since I had problems starting it on the mornings of late summer and fall as well. Any ideas?

I'd start by looking at the fuel system. Verify pressure and flow. Poor man's method would be to hook some hose up to the fuel bowl drain pipe and have a friend cycle the key. There should be "strong" flow out the hose.

Welcome to FTE. Started spitting out large black Styrofoam looking pieces out of where? The tail pipe? What do the pieces feel like if you pick them up?

How many miles are on the truck? How long since the last oil change? How much pressure do you have in the blowby? Does it start any easier if you plug it in for a couple of hours first?

Thanks. i will look into it. Im going to get a code reader and see if anything is happening with that as well. Usually it once i get it started it is fine and will run. This is the first time it has died out. Im really confused by the floating black specks that are all over the driveway. They look like little lightweight black ***** of lint all over.

Sorry F-350 6. I didnt even see your reply. It is spitting out of the tail pipe. They feel like ash or soot. 250,000 miles. I dont know what a blowby is. Does not start easier when warming it up. i plugged it in all night and it did nothing. I have another ps a year newer and it starts right up so I know that plugging it in isnt neccesary. Any ideas?

No. That is the AIH relay. It supplies power to the Air Intake Heater element.

The IPR is mounted on the HPOP. It is the Injection Pressure Regulator.

The IPR controls the oil pressure to the injectors via the ICP sensor and the PCM.

Wow, now thats a reply. Thanks for that info. I will check it out. Those parts dont look like they would be too pricey. Know what they cost? If they are cheap enough, i will just swap and see. If they are pricey, is there a way to test to see if they are good?

I just got an ICP form Parts Guy Ed and it was about $128 plus shipping. Seems like the retail was around $178.

the IPR can be a bit spendy. I lucked out a pretty big Diesel repair facility located next to me had them for insanely cheaper then anywhere I found on the internet, Ford, and International had.

IPR on Ebay looking around 130's The repair shop I got mine at had them stocked for 80 bucks.

Edit Take that back ICP's bit spendier then I seem to remember. Not sure what I was thinking of for 25 bucks

So when you guys switched out your IPR's, what was your truck doing that made you get new ones? Anything similar?

I was following a write up for cleaning the IPR, Its not suppose to be repairable, However it does come a part and can be cleaned. However I lost a tiny tiny piece in the write up that says "DO Not LOOSE THIS PIECE" so i needed a new IPR.

nothing wrong with my Truck I was bored and decided to take it apart and look at it out of curiosity and it cost me 80 bucks lol

Not all scanners can read the codes for the 7.3. If it was one of those generic OBDII code readers at a parts store they won't work.
