5.O Axle choices

Guys I had planned to get a 24 Ranger to replace my 04 but got a good offer from a Ranger diehard so I sold it and bought a 22 150 5.0 super cab as I've previously posted regarding exhaust mods. Haven't done anything with that and good thing as I'm getting to enjoy Coyote power and while I felt 150's were too big for my needs (I had to move some stuff in my garage to accomodate the 150 vs the Ranger, I'm beginning to like the "big truck".

One thing I don't like though, is I turned a blind eye the axle spec on the truck- a 3.31 without traction control. I've had some experience now with it on our fairgrounds and the truck is helpless on wet grass with any kind of grade, As I live 500 ft from town road, Idon't wan t to be using 4WD everytime I go out with an inch or two of snow/sleet on ground.

So I'll pay the price and I'm looking for a new 23 with same spec except a locking dif. Question is do I get a 3.31 or a 3.73? The 3.31 is nice as it cruises at like 15/1600 and you are doing close to 80. and around town with a light foot it maintains 11/1200 thsx to 10 speed. But I'm thinking the 3.73 will get me going with less throttle application while still giving decent hiway numbers
Anyone have an opinion?
Bob

I would go for the lower gear unless you plan on spending a lot of time on the highway. My truck runs 285 tires with 4:10s and does fine on the highway. I think 2200 rpm is 70 or 75.

The coyote is not a torque monster so the lower gears help.

Hey Bob I saw your other post- good Lu k on finding your new ride- I had both 3.31 (super 8.8) and 3.73 (9.75) in my coyote and the 3.73 were much better though I was running very heavy 35” tires at the time. If going 3.73 I highly recommend the 9.75 axle over the super 8.8- which is what they use in mustangs and rangers. The bigger one is seemingly twice as heavy which imo helped keep these aluma bodies stuck to the road. Godspeed

KD thx very much for response. I'm an old guy and easy on the gas- I owned an SHO and currently have an MKZ with 3.0 ECOB. 400 horse and have never done a burnout with either of them. I think if I had an 3.73 as I have a light foot I would be letting that 10 speed search next higher gear. But I also have a skid steer trailer and occasionaly pull my 4720 Deere that is probably around 6500 pds with loaded tires and 500 pound weight block. for sure 3.73's woiuld be better for that.

Thx I hear you on a lower gear . Most of my miles will NOT be Interstate so a 3.73 is a good compromise. vs my 3.31-which does like 80 around 17-1800.
