My husband and I have a 1997 Diesel truck that is leaking fuel sometimes. It is a funny thing. We can start it and it will leak turn it off start again and not leak a drop. What is going on?

He has tightened everything he can find and changed the fuel filter.

 

Is it possible that the fuel filter cap isn't on straight or that the rubber seal isn't on correctly? I made that mistake on my truck once and it leaked. I was beside myself until I noticed that the fuel filter cap wasn't fastened completely straight.

 

Did yours leak all the time? Ours seems to stop leaking after it has warmed up a little.

 

I don't know if it leaked when I was driving it, but it dripped when I stopped. This all happened over the period of only 1 day before I fixed the problem. It's possible that when you're driving that the fuel is being sprayed over the engine and it won't drip. It may or may not be your problem, but it's worth reinstalling the fuel filter just to check.

It leaks when we stop and look under the truck. We have started to go somewhere a couple of times and noticed it leaking and then turned around and went back home. Shut the engine off and restarted and it doesn't leak a drop. Can't seem to figure it out.

 

Where are you seeing the leak?
