Question about Explorer motor
98 Explorer, 4.0L (VIN E motor) 4x4 AT, need a new motor. Junk yard has a cheap and working 4.OL motor but it is for a VIN X Explorer. What is the difference between the motors and what will I need to do to make it work for my Explorer? Thanks.

The "E" motor is the SOHC version. The "X" motor is the OHV motor. Sounds like an easy swap but sure don't know.

I believe you will have problems and the ECM might be the least of them. Stick with the original engine type/code for the fewest problems.

I went through this with my 01 Expy Sport, other things you need to look at are; the production date, 2wd or 4wd, and 2 or 4 door.

Agreed! Even though both engines have identical displacements, the Overhead Cam Engine has operational differences covered by the computer.

After further review, I retract my statement! Be like comparing a 302 Ford vs a Ceby 302, just not going to be that easy.
