Morotbreath,

If you can be patient I can help you.

I just pulled my '62 (with 223) out of where its been parked for a few years - did a rebuild on the carb, and it ran like a champ for a few days - and then started giving me problems. It had been sitting for a long time, and I was running on the old fuel. When the weather settles down, I'll drain the tank, clean the carb out, throw a couple of new filters on with some fresh fuel and get her back on the road. Once its proven, I can pull the carb and come up your way (I go to bako every month or so anyways..).

I have a couple of spare 1904's, if you aren't sold on the 1960 I may be able to help you more permenantly. Work is about to send me on the road for a couple weeks, email me mid to late january.

Oh wow! Thank you!

I am in the process of getting my carb checked out by the guy who rebuilt it, so we'll see what happens.

About 1904's....I'd rather not. Only because I just want to see what the heck is the differences that a 1904 would work but two 1960's won't!

Thanks, and I will email you then!

So after fixing the fuel pump (leaking) last night I fired up this engine that has been sitting a while, It is a 226 not 223 like I previously mentioned, duh.
seems to run good, but I need to put some water in it before running it too much.

I am missing the dipstick, anyone know the oil fill measurements on one so I can make sure the level is right? I used a metal antennae to make sure there was at least a good amount of oil in it.

does this carb look like yours?

Cheers and Merry Christmas

Looks good. Your carb is on backwards if you did not notice, and i might have a dipstick if you are interested.

Ya, I realized it right after I tightened the nuts down lol! I was wondering if anyone would notice? Good Eye's

Ya I may be interested in a dipstick for it, that and the oil filler/breather cap was missing when I got it. If I can find a spot out of the way for this engine I probably should keep it, but could use the floor space.

I have a test stand that I can use to run engines on but it has a 239 on it right now so here is a redneck video of me doing something very stupid!

wow, what great picture quality! lol and high idle.

BTW to keep this on topic, the carb seems to work just fine.

Cheers

That's the most horsepower that shopping cart has ever seen! I would sure rather play with these flatheads than do body work! Blah!

Problem is basically solved.

The idle speed screw has to be turned in quite a bit apparently, or else it wont idle at open choke(since the screw isn't touching the cam at that point).

So, I go out there and screw it in 6-7 times. Fire up the motor......within warmup--vio-la. The truck runs with open choke. I restarted it twice and for some unknown reason it didn't idle smooth at all, not as smoothly and perfectly as the first run. That was weird.

So I went back out there a few minutes ago and toyed with it some more. What I did was set the idle speed high and pushed the choke fully open, then I dropped the idle speed from there. So far it purrs like a kitten at 650-700 which is where I'm going to leave it.......500-600 is just too low. Right?
----------------------------------------

Problem:
(Keep in mind this is all at a stand still, truck is not driving yet)

When I give it quite a heavy foot, whether from idle, or at high rpms, the motor puffs a little black smoke. Not a lot, just enough to notice.

Now, I have NOT tuned the timing/idle speed/mixture yet with a vacuum gauge like I was told to. I need an extra person for that.

So is that puffing normal with these motors/carbs? Or is that just a characteristic of a non-tuned carb, and it will go away after I tune it properly? Or is it the sign of something bad?

Thank you all. Happy holidays.

Great, you figured it out. The black smoke isn't a problem though, it usually indicates 'unburnt fuel'. When you get the carb and motor fined tuned that will (should)
go away. Happy Holidays to you.
