heater wiring 1946 1/2 ton

Can anyone straighten me out on the placement of the four wires from the motor to the switch? As viewed from the back of the switch, let's call the positions 12 o'clock, 3, 6 and 9 for reference. My wires are faded, but two of them are striped, one is yellow and the other some yellowish color.
I'm reasonably certain when I took them off (and stupidly relied on the memory of the bent wires to indicate which one went where), that the stripers went to positions 3 and 9. The 6v hot wire went to the 12 o'clock position, where it was supplied by the power coming in: so, two wires connected at 12. The other one I fasted to the 6 position. The motor does not run.
Before I by-pass the switch in case the contacts are dirty, I'd like to know what wires are supposed to go where.

I resolved this problem

By some error and a little trial, I discovered the correct wiring for this switch.
The two striped wires go to the terminals at 9 and 3 o'clock (rear view).
One yellow wire goes to 6 o'clock; the other yellow wire to ground.
The six volts from the terminal block on the steering column goes to the top (12 o'clock position).

Evidently (?) the switch when clicked to the right (operator's position) connects one winding in the motor; and to the left a different winding. In a healthy motor the two clicks to either side probably worked a slower and a faster speed of rotation. In mine, one position is weak, barely moving the fan, and the other turns it adequately.
Comments?

these switches have resistors in them, and i would not suggest running them on low. They manage to get real hot. I do have wiring harnesses if anyone needs to have one rebuilt PM me.

resister in the heater switch

Thanks for this comment. I noticed the resister coil on the back of the switch at the top (battery voltage) terminal. Mine ran so weakly on the first setting, that I will only use the second setting. One puzzle remains: what is the difference between the left positions and the right positions?

The positions are for HEAT and DEFROST the heater is a reversible motor. It spins in one direction to push heat out the doors and to warm the cab, and the other direction it pulls heat back through the doors, to the squirrel cage, and up to your defroster ducts. Its quite a piece of engineering. I have restored dozens of these if anyone has any more questions ill be happy to answer them.

No, you will have to find a NOS one or a used one. The NOS ones pop up on ebay from time to time.

Sorry such an old thread - but it says I cannot send fifty-two f1 private messages.

I found an old thread where you say you have restored numerous fan. Does it matter which side the striped wires go on the back of the reversible fan switch? I see the striped wires go on the 9 & 3 oclock positions, but does it matter which is at 9 and which is at 3? It is an old 2012 thread

heater wiring 1946

I observed that the 3 o'clock/ 9 o'clock connections control fast / slow speed of the fan motor. These two connections seem to be reversable.

Hope this helps,
