If you've got a NP208 transfer case it bolts up to a ZF with no worries.

the zf5 can also be found mated to the powerstroke in the F250,350 up to 1997.

Diesel ZF bolt pattern is different than the 300, ditto the big block version...

It is also possible to convert the ZF to a manual clutch. There is a thread regarding it.

I don't want to cast a shadow on your hopes, but I'd say that finding a truck in the j.yard with all the needed goodies to do the swap is going to be the proverbial needle in a haystack.

Here is a photo of all you need.

do you have the link for the manual clutch conversion for the zf s5-42

Tranny Swap

Ford did put the zf5 on the 300. I had a 1988 with a zf in it. I think it was part of a heavy duty option as my 4x4 had dual shocks on the front and an extra leaf in the rear springs.

Was the 88 an F-250 or 350? I imagine you can find quite a few 300s with a ZF behind it since the 300s came in the 250/350 trucks.

Dual shocks in the front was a pretty common option. Both my Broncos have them.

My e-mail keeps losing connection when I hit reply so I may reply more than once to this. It was an f150 with an 8.8 rear end 3.55 gears.

It's hard to say with a lot of those cases. Did you get the truck new? If not, almost anything can be special ordered from the factory, or someone may have swapped it in before you got it.
Nice find though. A 300 with a ZF is about as good as it gets!

Bought it second hand but I am sure it was HD special order from the factory. Zf's are a good tranny but it had the lighter hydraulic clutch in it in front of it. Just a 1/2 ton truck. I also had an f250 with an AOD and it was a decent tranny. Running a c-6 behind a 300 now and it's a good tranny too.

Transfer Cases

Ford did some changing from NP transfer cases to BorgWarner in the mid '80s. I have an '84 with an NP208. I have an '87 and used to have an '88 and both r Borg transfers. All of them seem to stand up fairly well.

im getting a little off topic now, but how would you determine if the tranny is a close or wide ratio?Serial number?id tag? also i believe the zf s5-47 is also mated with the small blocks(i300). Am i wrong?
Thanks for your great information

Don't take this to the bank because it's "if I remember correctly", but some of the diesel ZF trannies used an external slave and could theoretically be converted to manual clutch. The gas versions - and the small block in particular - use a donut-shaped internal slave that fits around the input shaft. I suppose a determined person could fabricate a manual clutch conversion, maybe, but without looking under my truck I'll say it would be far, far easier to mount a clutch master cylinder on your firewall. There's nowhere on the ZF to mount a clutch fork and no opening in the case through which it could protrude.

There are no close or wide ratio ZF's per se, just diesel and gas. Diesels use different gear ratios. The small block ZF5 s42 and s47 are interchangeable on a 300.
