Question 80" x 50" (83" x 54"?) normal bed size for a Ford Ranger? Looking for a camper shell!

Hey everyone. I'm hoping someone here can help me. I'm currently looking for a camper shell to put on top of my 1995 Ranger. I'm having a hard time finding one that matches the dimensions that I'm getting when I measure the bed.

First of all, this only has one set of seats that back right up against the back window - NO space in back of them. That makes this a standard cab, correct? Either way, that's what my setup is, just for reference.

So as for the bed measurements - I am getting 80" x 50" when I measure the INSIDE of the bed. I'm assuming that puts me at a 83" x 54" bed when the sides of the truck are considered. Does that sound about right? To be honest - I'm not using tape measure, as I can't find it anywhere. I've been reduced to using vinyl records that I know are 12" across to get these numbers. Still, they should be just about accurate.

But my problem is that I'm seeing a lot of shells for sale that are in fact 83" long, but a wide 72" across. What are my chances of coming along one that fits these dimensions? Was this an off-size for the Ranger? Thanks in advance!

Welcme to FTE

My Ranger bed is about 61" wide by 74" long (measured outside to outside anong the top rails). I have the standard 6' bed. There is also an optional 7' bed only found on regular cab Rangers (like yours).

Do you have a step side bed? Are the wheel wells inside or outside the bed? If outside than you are just about looking for a neadle in a hey stack. There are not many step side bed caps out there. There is one on the NH Craigslist right now though. I don't know where you are located.

Full size truck is about 72" wide. As measured on my '68 F250.

It sounds like you are finding full size truck caps. That makes sence. There are more full size caps out in the used market than mini-truck caps. Yep the Ranger is classified mini-truck.

Keep looking. I have had luck on Craigslist in the past. Try that site for the area you are in. If you do, put ranger in the search. Being you have a '95 some S10, tacoma and nissan (forget there small truck name) caps might fit also. I would definatly do a test fit if they are off a non Ranger truck.

Good luck

I don't know about the size of your truck bed, but I am really impressed by your measuring device!

If those are the measurements your getting, your bed is the same dimensions as a 92-96 F150 Flareside. I had a camper for awhile and eventually sold it. In the year since I haven't seen a single other one for sale online. I doubt you'll find one.

Edit: Didn't realize the original post was 2 years old... My bad...

similar problem. I have a 94 with the optional 7 foot bed with a regular cab. (i wish it was the extended cab with the long bed bc that would be awesome). I keep seeing stuff for the short bed (6 foot). What we have is the regular cab LWB model. There is LWB long wheel base and SWB is the short. The extended cab models are LWB but short bed only. The SWB only are regular cab short bed. Now that thats settled your numbers are pretty close. 72" is the numbers for the short bed and 84" is for the long bed. Most people just call our size the long bed. Its gonna be a difficult search but its possible.
