Truck only goes in reverse

I was going duck hunting this am and the truck wouldn't go into 4x4. I got over it and just went in 2x4. Now I got home and it will only go in reverse. It will catch for just a second in drive, but then kicks out.
For some reason I belive this is in my transfer case, but I am not sure. What should I start checking? It doesn't matter if I have it in D, 1, or 2 it acts the same. This makes me think it wouldn't be the trans???
I put on Warn hubs, but did not block my vac lines yet. Is that super important or just helps keep crap out if they hoses are bad? There must be a slight vacuum leak because the defroster turns on with the 4x4, but not all the time.

Thanks in advance for the help! Talk about a time when I don't need this!!!

I would think if it goes in Rev fine but no Forward the problem has to be in the tranny, thats how auto's quit good one minute & no good the next, how far can you back up with it? how does the fluid smell?

I should mention it has a snow plow...but I only plow my drive and a neighbors. Not a commercial rig.
I had actually backed onto the road and then was stuck on the road. In order to get it back into the driveway I backed down the road to the next intersection and then whipped it around and backed back up to the ladies driveway. I would guess just short of a mile total??? Didn't smell the fluid, I will go up there and do that.

ok Scott, when you go up there it will have cooled off now so try it & see what happens, if it only goes Forward when its cold (fluid is thicker) then there is a problem with the tranny.Reverse is good so that meens the pump & torque should be ok but probably still has to come out.

I had drive an old oldsmobile of mine years ago all the way in reverse. About 3-4 miles. Glad it was late at night.

New tranny was in order.

I get call's all the time to diagnose a tranny over the phone & all I can do is guess from past experience, if all you have is reverse & you're not far from home you do what you have to do eh Scott.

I hear you there. I think it might be safer if I drive it 4 miles in reverse then if I have my wife flat tow me home
I went and checked it out again and the tranny fluid doesn't smell too bad to me. It smells used, but not burnt. It was a hair on the low side, but still just into the C hash marks. It would go forward, but not that well...better than before, but not good enough to get home.

I think it's tranny time Scott, sorry but ask somebody around you to get a second opinion.

It sounds like you are in the business, what should I go for when I take it in? John Woods rebuild? Stock Rebuild? "Common" aftermarket stock+ rebuild?

shop around but ask them to rebuild it stock with upgraded parts & get a warranty, blow out the cooler, some wont warranty it if there is a plow on it even if you only do 1 driveway. Maybe take a chance on a used one?

I have had my trans out and replaced with used 5 times in the last four months. I have spent hundreds on fluid filters and misc. things. I recommend getting a rebuilt. I wish I had done that to begin with. Now am on third tranny and all have had different issues. This new one searches for a gear while accelerating in second. Oh well, it does go forward. Just wish I had spent the extra six hundred on a rebuilt with 3 year warranty. I did splurge and buy a new HD torque conv. with this last install. Good luck.

SDV10 is right, never mind the used ones unless you know exactly where it came from & even then you are taking a chance, get the warranty

I had a trans go out in my 02 Silverado 1500. Shop wanted like 1 grand to drop it and open it up, then tell me what was wrong with it! So, I got on Craigslist, found a transmission guy who had over 25 years experience and was AAMCO certified and ASE Master Tech, he rebuilt it with upgraded parts (not the cheap stuff) for $850ish. So try Craigslist and you might get lucky and save some $$$

The rollback just took it away. I ended up going with Automatic Transmission Service in Janesville for lack of knowing of anyone else. They even offered free towing...what a deal...
I have a good feeling about them. I called and he said they really like to rebuild the 4R100. He listed a lot of the upgrades they do to them when they are in there. If they did their rebuild with upgraded clutches, TC, etc it would max out at $2600. He also was willing to let me get a John Woods/BTS shipped in and they would install it. Not a bad option either.

either way it has to be fixed, if something goes wrong at least you can complain to them.
