Do you have Daytime Running Lights? The wiring is different if they are installed.

I do not believe it has daytime running lights. If it was the bulb then why would both headlights go out??

Multifunction Switch

Check the connections. If all good, replace the switch.

Just to clarify, when you say "when I hit it again, they come back on" do you mean when you put the switch back to high beams? ie. high beams work but low beams don't?

As ridiculous as it sounds, both bulbs can fail at the same time. I tore my van apart on a trip one time when both low beams stopped working. After hours of hunting for shorts, testing switches etc, I changed the bulbs and low and behold, I had low beams again.

I just replaced my multifunction switch for the same reason. I had 12v to the switch but 1-2v out. If I worked the switch a couple times I got 12v out.

I cracked open the old switch and it was nasty inside. They are apparently not sealed well. Lots of dust and grime in there.

OEM ~$150 out the door.

I bought a new to me 2000 f350 that didn't have any high beams, and I thought the switch was bad. This fall I hooked up the snow plow, and the high beams work on the plow with the switch so the switch works, and maybe it's just the bulbs.
