Unhooking Wastegate?

Hey guys I was just wondering what would happen if I unhooked the lead to my wastegate? Would there be any benefits? Higher boost? Or would it cause more problems than it would do good for the truck?

Just kinda curious, seems like I remember some guys doin it. Thanks in advance.

I tried it for a while and it wasn't as good as adjusting the wastegate rod to open at 12 psi.
DP tuner wants you to run with it connected if that means anything as well.

Also just so you know I dont have guages yet so I cant monitor boost or egt's. And also I do like to err on the cautious side of things. So if its something that needs to be monitored closely then I prob wont do it. Like I said before I was just wonderin if its a simple mod that may give me a bit more boost without possible major consiquences.

I am planning on gettin a banks bighead later on down the line after some other mods, like guages haha, I need em bad I know its the next mod.

If your signature is accurate then you will not hurt anything. You will get another lb or 2 of boost at WOT, but you most likely won't be able to tell by the seat of your pants. If you have a tuner or chip, then don't do it unless you have a boost gauge and can make sure your turbo doesn't go over 25psi (which is the safe limit for a stock turbo). You won't be able to go over 25psi without tunes of some sort, though.

Ok guys thanks. Ill prob just leave it alone for now. I dont have any tunes, but im plannin on get DP as soon as I get guages.

How do you adjust it to open at a certain PSI? Do you have to have a boost guage to know?

This maybe a stupid question, but what if you made the hole smaller on the waste gate.

The rod is adjustable, disconnect it or adjust it.

Which way is which? Do you adjust it out or in to increase the blow off pressure?

Using a setup like this with your boost pressure canister being this old vaccuum canister off of a distributor. I have used it for the sake of illustration.
Watch the video and it will explain what IMO is the best way to get these turbo wastegates adjusted.

Forgive my ignorance, but how is it adjusting?

From what I can disifer in the video it looks like he is just putting compressed air into the wategate and it somehow adjusts?

There is a spring inside the canister that is pulling the wastegate shut.
Adjust the length of the rod until the WG won't begin to open until it hits 12 psi.
Most likely you will be shortening it up about four turns.
Use a pair of vise grips to anchor the rod coming out of the canister or you'll twist it in the canister, don't know if that will hurt the diaphram but it pays to err on the side of caution.

FYI, Some of the early tuners/chips came with a "boost tube". This was a short section of tube that was connected between the red line elbow and the wastegate actuator. The tube had a tiny orifice in the side of it that allowed some of the boost pressure to escape and delay the wastegate opening. Dan's method of adjustment allows more precise control.

Just MHO don't waste your $$ on the bighead wastegate go with the turbomaster from dieselsite, much easier to adjust & get the #'s you want
