how much louder without cats?

right now my truck has the two cats up front and then a one into two dual exhaust. its a generic muffler and its pretty quiet. i would say its about as loud as a stock truck but just a little deeper. how much louder will my truck be if i delete the two cats? will the truck smell while its running? -thanks

Why not run a 3 inch peice of pipe from the front cat back to the muffler. Then you'll still have one cat. Thats a good way to go. It will sound better but won't be super loud. Then if you need to replace the front cat later you can get a high flow dual in single out.

okay thanks. my cats seem to be on their way out as it is, the truck smells sometimes. they dont seem to be restricting anything tho. i like the idea of leaving one cat in.

You have two cats on a '92? I have a '92 and all it has is the stupid collector/cat that serves as a y-pipe too. That's the stock exhaust. I thought most of these trucks didn't have two cats until '94 or '95. Is yours a cali emissions truck?

I think that the 2 cat setup started with EFI in 87.

I got a magnaflow high flow cat and it doesn't restrict any sound, just the annoying clack and pop when slowing down in gear (it's a manual) that way there's still a cat on it and everything

I'm running 2 1/4 straight pipes (no cats, no mufflers). I didn't see a huge difference when I took my cats off. When I chopped off the crapmasters and welded in a piece of pipe is when I noticed the most difference. It's LOUD now. Yes, it will smell, but again, you won't notice much of a noise difference with just taking off the cats. New York has emissions checks don't they?

I have a 95 5.8, I cut the front cat off, welded dual pipes on, and ran them to a 2 in/2out Magnaflow Stainless muffler with the x chamber, then duals out the back. I had to start it with the straight pipes on and boy was it loud! After I put the muffler on, it was too quiet. Its not much louder than stock @ idle, but gives you a nice crackle as the rpms come up. If I were to do it over, I'd go with two smaller magnaflows. The muffler I put on is REAL big and I had to shoe horn it in. Before I did that it had the front cat/collector, the rear and a cherry bomb, single pipe out the side. Had to have duals!

hey mate, can you post a video up of your truck? I'm thinking of doing this to mine and would love to hear how it sounds. What headers are you running?

Are you sure New York is going to stop testing OBD I vehicles? I wonder if Texas is going to stop testing OBD I vehicles. I would think that if we still do it then sure NY does.

By the way, I wouldn't try to make that 300 too loud. It won't sound the way you want it to. A nice deep mellow sound is the best way to go for it.
