Working on a rebuild of a DD for my Godfather. its a 95 f150 regular cab, 8 foot bed, 5.0L 4r70w trans 4x4 . I discovered today that my gear ratio is 3.31.. EWWW WOW holy snikes.. I bought the truck with a blown engine, I am working on the build, now.. waiting on the machine shop. This truck is for a daily driver, that will haul some firewood, and climb a steep mountain road in the winter... How bad will these gears hurt my torque. Suggestions?
Thats better than 3.08 , like Brad said drive it & see , the 4R70W has the wide ratio gear set in them , so 1st & 2nd gear are lower , plus the 95 will have more hp than the older 302s , it should be a mass air motor ....Lew
I don't think you'll have any trouble with those gears doing what you listed. I don't think a change to 3.55 would be big enough to make a huge difference. I have 3.55's with the same size tire as you, and while it isn't a rocket ship with a trailer, it gets the job done.
I think that those gears with stock or even 30x9.50x15 tires would be alright.
I got 3.55's and 30" tires and... NOPE.. it ain't enough gear for a 5.0 and heavy hauling IMO. In hilly terrain and when hauling just turn off OD and the truck should do OK, not great but proibably good enough for a DD.

Keep in mind this is coming from a guy with this in his signature:
1996 Kawasaki ZX11D w D&D 4into1 and jet kit. 550lbs, 150hp.
For a DD and some occasional hauling, I think it will be fine and not worth the expense/hassle of a gear change.
