I recently picked up a 94' F-150. This truck has 265,000 on it. It cost $500. Less than a year ago a 302 with 40,000 miles was put in it. It needed a transmission. I put another E40D in and thought I would have been done but I seem to continously encounter problem after problem. Now, I have dug into the archives to learn that there are numerous recalls with the E40D in 94'. I have the one that was supposedly bad, plus the one that I put in. I guess the one that was in there has a blown "lipseal"?. I merely know what others tell me and what I have experience with, and I have no experience with automatic transmissions. And I know few people who do. Should I even bother with it or send the original one somewhere to get "fixed". I understand there are upgrades available for the E40D and the tax returns are coming so I need to decide soon. This truck also has a fast idle and I can't find my Manual. I know there is an idle speed adjustment on the side of the transmission and i can adjust it but rather than tearing into it and potentially causing more problems I was hoping there would be someone with experience out there to guide me a bit. I guess there may be a possibility that the engine itself is at too high of an idle, but i would guess it is a transmission problem since I just changed them. I apologize if there is insufficient information here, please ask me and I will fill in the gaps.
I have a '90 model with an E4OD and I love it. It's never given me a minutes problem and I have 165,000 miles on it. If you don't mind shelling out a few bucks I would take it to a reputable shop and have it completely checked out and have them do an overhaul if needed. If you don't care for this style of transmission you might be able to find a C-6 or AOD cheaper, though.
my 90 has the e4OD, its never given me a problem, it just baffles me why they put a heavy duty tranny in a truck with 3.08's. there are electrical gremlin upgrades for the tranny, which would solve a lot of its early-year problems. could also be the comp in the truck is trying to kill itself, though that is just a possiblilty, but that fast idle problem could be an indication of that, but it could be caused by a host of other things as well.
Thanks guys. I guess I'll check into getting an overhaul. I really do like the gear ratio with this tranny. I have 31x10.50's on the stock aluminum wheels and it lacks no power thats for sure. It seems to be a reasonably strong motor. I also have a 95' F150. 300 I6 with the 5-speed manual. I get better mileage with the automatic. Possibly because of my driving habits.
I have pictures of my trucks on my camera and I would like to put them in the user gallery. Anyone give me a few pointers?
I went through 3 E4OD's (1 Brand new from a Ford dealership and the other rebuilt from a Leemyles)
On the last failure i went with a C-6. I beat the snot out of this tranny, and it just keeps going.
You guy's are correct. The E4OD in my opinion is a crabby transmission in stock form, but it can be built into a real good tran's. Several company's make a good up-grade for this transmission. I prefer using the one from Tras-go. It require's a complete tear down, so the best time to install it is during a rebuild. A few of you guy's stated that you have E4OD's in 90 model truck's. How can this be? The E4 came out in late 93.
There is a product on the market that once installed allow's you to set the shift point's and lock-up point where you want it. I;ll have part number's and manufacturer name for you later.
I have the E4OD and have had several c6s, my E4OD seems like a C6 with an overdrive, we had the van loaded and a uhaul trailer, aprox 8500 pound + the vehicle, were going up and down mountains no problem.. If there was a problem with the tranny it should have gone all over the ground...... We were in second gear at one point in time and maintaining 65 mph.
someone said that the e4od came out in late 93? the 93 f150 4x4 i had was made in late 92 and it had a e40d. good tranny but when it was stock it seems to shift way too soft for my taste
The E4OD must not have come out in 1993, as I have one in my 1990 F150. The time and stiffness of the shift is determined electronically using different factors (engine speed, torque, load,...), so it will (or at least should) shift harder under certain conditions. I've pulled everything from boats to heavy laden horse trailers etc and the E4OD has always performed beautifully. If you put the pedal down it won't shift out of 2nd gear until 75-76 miles per hour. Mine is completely original and has never had anything done but regular service.
