New Tires AND Rims! What do you think?

I did it! I finally got 'em. The truck needed them pretty bad as it vibrated like crazy and one tire was bald on the inside due to bad ball joints. The ball joints have been replaced as well as the inner main seals, dust seals, and all the O-rings and washers that're in the hubs. I think I'm in for new hubs eventually, but hey, 298K outta the same set of hubs ain't bad. The tires are the same tires that were on the truck before: 315/75/16's. After some research and brain-picking, I decided to stick with the BFG All-Terrains. They're great for those of us who're on the road more than off and every set my dad had on previously lasted well over the 50K they're warrantied for. On top of that, they're USA-made and are pretty good price-wise: $1000 mounted and balanced for all four corners.

As for rims, I went with some 16x10" Eagle Alloys... they're the 058-series wheels. My old rims were some 16x8" American Racing AR-23's. They were dull as a door nail and were beginning to crack on the back next to each of the lug holes. I didn't like how narrow they were... the tires seemed "stuffed" under the truck and with the amount of lift I have, it kinda looked stupid. Plus, I think that while 8" is the minimum-recommended rim width, it's still a bit too narrow and causes the tires to "balloon". With the tire pressure always below 50PSI (max PSI load rating), it still wore a bit excessively in the center. But anyhow, these rims fit the bill! They were good price-wise and were USA-Made as well... I got them off eBay as a package deal which included the wheels, center caps, valve stems, and lugs. The total was $525 with FREE shipping! As for looks, they were classic in appearance, but not quite like the typical modular wheels that everybody else has. Needless to say, I'm VERY happy with them!

But I've got pictures... the first is just for reference so you can see what I've upgrading from. As a side note, notice the difference in the stance of my truck in the old picture compared to the new ones. That was before I leveled the truck and got a tack bar back in there (any of you remember my round-about with that?)... it was a 3.5" difference in height! Now, it's 1 to 1.5"... it works good because it sits right when loaded and it'll allow room for when I drop a flatbed on it.

Yeah, I'm gonna have to do something soon... I paid outta my nose for these so I'm gonna take care of them. Supposedly, Eagle Alloys makes something just for this?

I have always liked those wheels. I had a set of Mickey Thompsons that looked almost exactly like those. Great looking combo, I love my BFG's too.

With 491 hp, maybe that is the reason

I had a set of the M/T's on my other truck and put right at 50k on them when I sold it. They still had pretty good tread. I had A/T's on mine when I bought it, they had something like 45k when I took them off. Replaced them for no reason other than they broke loose in my field all the time. So I went with a little more aggressive tread. Now the next set I buy, will probably be more of a A/T tire again, unless I find something that is quieter.

Looks great man. X2 on the wax. Get 'em coated good and keep on it. I have had 2 sets of wheels like that on rigs and didn't take very good care of 'em as far as wax goes and they went to hell fast! But if you keep up on 'em they'll shine like that for a long time.

Again looks killer. My truck has 20s on it, (came that way) and I kinda want to down size the wheels now!

Thanks, guys... I like them better everyday. I'm VERY pleased with how they turned out!

As far as wear goes, I think the only reason mine wore so well was because I rotated them EVERY oil change. It had always been front-to-back, back-to-front. I might try cross-rotating them so every tire gets an even amount of time on the front and back going both directions... we'll see.

I'd also like to note that when I went to the wider rims, it made a HUGE difference in stability. When I made my typical run for feed, it didn't hardly squirm at all! I was shocked... it was SO nice feeling like I had control of my truck. If it weren't for my headache, I would've enjoyed the ride home.

PwerStroke99:

I would think your power would have something to do with it. I know my grandpa had the fuel on his 12V Cummins twisted up a bit and when he went on a 10K road trip pulling 10K (cool, a mile for ever pound!), he didn't rotate the tires and it wore his rear tires down quite a bit more than the front... enough to be obvious anyways.
