Question K&N Air Filter System 1996 Bronco

I have a 1996 Eddie Bower 5.8L Bronco and have been told that K&N does not make a filter intake for a 1996 Bronco. Is this true? If so what is a good substiture?

Are you talking about the FIPK (fuel injection performance kit), or just the drop in filter? I know they make the drop in filter, I have one in my 96. Im also pretty sure they make the FIPK for it too (but its overrated from the responses ive gotten in the past). Check out MotorHaven, they should have whatever you are looking for. BTW, the drop in filter dramatically changed the performance of my 96. That silly MAF sensor is damn sensitive.

The drop-in is better than the FIPK, for the money & effort.

K&N does make a FIPK kit for the 96 Bronco. It is different because your 96 has a Mass Air sensor. The FIPK kit is probably a better value for your 96 because it is Mass Air and you will be able to take full advantage of the extra airflow.

I personally prefer the fipk, I put one in my 95 5.0L and I wouldn't want anything else. The kit I got costs about $135, yours should cost the same, and it comes with everything you need. If you are mechanically inclined it won't take much more then an hour to install. Truck performance.com does have one available for the 96 5.8L.

I looked at ProjectMPG, and saw that the whole induction system was wrapped in some sort of insulating wrap. Where do I get some of this wrap, and do you do every piece of the induction (from front lip all the way to the throttle body?)

I personally have the drop-in filter in my '92 302 and thats all I intend to do. No matter how you look at it, the FIPK may be nice but it still draws warmer air in because of its all under-hood design. That may not be a problem for those who live in areas where summer is 75-80 degrees but when you are running in summer temps that are pushing 95+ your under-hood temps are gonna be that much higher than the air outside the engine compartment. Any chance I can get to get cooler air into the intake system I'm gonna go for. Its a time honored performance improvement that need not be sacrificed for flow improvements.

I fabricated my own FIPK using a 6" dia X 10" long K&N filter. I think the filter itself was designed for one of the GM diesels. My system still utilizes the twin intake tubes and the filter settup resides in the same location as the original. I fab'd up a structure that plenums the twin tubes to the K&N. The PCV system intake is incorporated within and I also re-utilized the stock cold air scoop/tubing to bring fresh/cool air in. The cool intake system and fliter settup is not in a closed system so if the cool intake is not adequate then the filter can draw any additional air needed from the engine compartment. I plan on buying one of those K&N prefilter socks to slip over the filter for some additional insurance. They say the socks will reduce flow some but the filter I used is so huge that it won't make any real difference in flow.

That's what I did. I got it at a hardware store for ~$10 for 2 packs, and that did everything. You can see it in my 83 album in my sig link.
