engine questions

ok guys i recently aquired a winter project.. a 351 from a 86 f150.. now it has the 4bbl carb at the moment..

i plan on full rebuild to "brand new" engine status...
i also want to do a few minor upgrades while it is easy to do..

1. headers.... what is a fair priced set that will work well without modification (i.e. frame clearance) for a 89 f250 4wd with ZF5 speed.

2. i want to put in a better cam.. i know it has been asked a million times but what cam works good with SD computer (brings me to #3) i want to get that lopey sound out of it.. i believe its the rv cam style i want?? not sure

3. i want to get rid of th carb and change it to fuel injected... issue around here is no junkyards have the 5.8.. but (what seems to be) thousands of 5.0's.. my question is is the intakes (lower and/or upper) interchangable on these, and how much airflow loss am i looking at with a 5.0 intake if it will work...

thanks guys

The upper and lower intake for 5.0 and 5.8 are not interchangable. They may look the same, but they are not at all.

As Texasguy001 said, the intakes aren't interchangeable, because the 5.8's block is taller than the 5.0, to accommodate the additional stroke, because of that, the exhaust y pipe is wider also. If you're planning on shorty headers, you'll need that y pipe, or possibly you could modify yours with some cutting & welding, not sure.

If you're planning on long tubes, I don't know what brand fits well. I have an '89 F250 5.8 also, I've got the Ford Racing shorties on it, not cheap, but I've got GT40P heads on it, so didn't have much choice. Fit is great though.

As far as cams, with SD you need to find a cam with 114 deg lobe separation, which won't give you a lot of overlap, even if duration is increased somewhat, and the increased overlap is what will give you the lope you're looking for. I don't really have a good cam selection for you, any SD cam would be better than stock, but I don't think any are capable of the radical, cammy sound it seems you want.

Upgrading the cam is no problem but you're going to have to forget about getting a lopey sound as the low vacuum signal that creates is exactly what SD can't tolerate. The Crane 444232 is the cam you want and I promise you won't be disappointed with the power it produces.
You need a 5.8 specific intake... both the upper and lower, and you need a 5.8 specific fuel rail and distributor too, plus the accessory brackets from an EFI motor and of course all the sensors, wiring, and computer. So bottom line is you need to find a 5.8 donor truck for this project.

cool.. thanks for the quick responses... somehow i had a feeling the intakes wernt interchangable, but i figured i would ask anyways lol.. as far as headers, im thinking shorty's just for simplicity, and beings that the truck is already a 351 the y pipe isnt a issue... and i guess that says it all on the cam lol, thanks Conanski
