from reading the previous posts on this string I'm guessing I can at least see the ring if I crank the wheel right or left and look for something that looks like a ring w/ teeth on the axle heading to the wheel.
Then I need to be able to look around the ring for a crack or some apparent defect.
Haven't been home yet to check, but that's what I'm looking for, right?

I have the same issue on my 05 XLT V6, Brought it to my local Ford Dealership.
Service advisor took it and had a mechanic look at it. He calls me at work and says my exciter (toner) ring is cracked. He advises me that it is 100% the problem.
So I'm like fine, if you say its 100% then do it.
$300 (had oil change done and bought new front brake hoses) later I pick up the escape and then 2 blocks down the street, the lights go back on and the 4WD is disconnected and I'm on FWD.....
I call the service advisor back and tell him that he said it would be fixed no matter what and he's like "I never said that" and basically said i'm out of luck and we should try replacing a sensor. (Not going back unless I get a sweet deal)
Like are these guys on commission?
I'll keep this thread posted on what happens.

They said it was a 3 hour job. If I were being charged, it would be the shop charge for 3 hrs.

Those two lights have not come back on--not expert enough to know if that means both are now working properly, just that the dash lights are off.
When the 4WD light was flashing--I couldn't tell if the 4WD was disengaged or not. Not sure how I'd know.
Didn't brake hard enough to know about ABS either.
If the tone ring breaks does that mean the sensor can't tell if the wheel is slipping? Does that alone disengage the 4WD?
