Locking hub questions

Alright so my truck had been making a very nerve-raking rattle for like a month. And being out of work at the time I had no means of fixing it, so I eventually called my uncle and he said it sounded like one of the hubs was locked and the other free.
Turns out he was right, I'm curious if havin one hub locked for a long time like that can cause damage.
Also with the recent coming snow I was told to keep my hubs locked, and truck in 2wd till I needed it. I've noticed much more get up and go from a dead stop, and higher rpm's/shifting easier.
I'm aware some is prolly in my head. Now I'm curious if this can cause any damage to the truck? It makes a rattle feeling/noise on hard full turns. But not with regular driving.
I would appreciate answers, or tips tricks.
Especially the proper way to engage things into 4x4, and for getting out of it. It always shudders and jumps, and makes unhealthy noises when I do as I'm sure I'm doing it wrong. (first manual transfer case, last vehicle was electronic)
Thanks for all the assistance.

don't leave them locked in that is not a good thing to be doing.... with everything unlocked your not putting any additional stress on the front diff the axles the transfer case ect.... with it locked in your turning everything. lock it in when you need it and unlock it when you don't you will save yourself money that way. it pops when you turn because its trying to turn the front axle shafts as well and you cant turn it as sharp locked in. 4x4 on these trucks is more like a tool you only use it when you need it. its not hard to hop out and click the lockers in when you know your going to need it and unlock it when your done. also some people say when you unlock it you need to drive it a minimum of 50 feet opposite the direction you were traveling to ensure everything unlocks properly.

i believe you can engage 4x4 moving at slow speeds but i don't... never have and never will and wouldn't recommend it to anyone. why chance it?????
i turn the lockers on, pull the transfer case into whatever gear i want then put the trans in gear and off i go

had the same issue on my 4runner, both were locked. it shredded the bearings in the hub, scarred up the hub itself and trashed the locker. had to get a whole complete knuckle. was cheaper then trying to fix it. just keep an eye on the bearings. check the play now and again.

I don't know where you are driving, that makes a lot of difference. I work on a ranch and I am usually on soft ground, not pavement. If you are on pavement, then I would not recommend leaving it looked in. Mine, however are looked in almost always, unless I am going to town. I NEED my lookout locked in because I shift in "on the fly" most of the time. "94" asks why chance it? Well, because if I stop to put in my hubs and pull the t case, I just as well start walking for the tractor, I am already stuck. That is just my situation. His is obviously different and yours may be too. It you are on hard ground, or road situations and don't use the 4x4 very often then don't leave them in, just like "94" says
It is just unnecessary binding.

Thanks for all the great info.
If it's trashed, it's trashed, no real biggy, I was planning on swapping to a Dana 60 and putting warn hubs on anyways.
This'll just give me the push to do it if it's ruined. I'll swap them to free tomorrow, I just started doing work for a guy delivering firewood, mostly road driving, but there will be a lot of snow/ice/soft soil driving, and having a trailer attached as well. I thought I could save myself some trouble.

Also side question is it possible to install a Dana 70HD rear axle from a early 80's B350 cube van? Supposedly great condition, with a solid 4.56 gear ratio. He's asking $150 but I can probably get it cheaper.

thats cool but thats a pretty low gear man. you might wanna look for a overdrive unit behind a overdrive transmission. unless you like high rpm's and low speeds. im talking redline in your 1to1 gear at 60mph.

Couldn't I swap it to a more appropriate gear?
This is all talk at the moment, he doesn't seem to have a lot of takers, and if I could get it cheap, and just swap the gears to like 4.10(I think thats it) for when I get a lift kit, and bigger tires and install it then and have a good solid rear axle I don't have to worry about to much.

gears are something that unless you have the tools and very good know-how you wanna just have it done. if hears arent set just right then they are going to wear quickly and waste your money. figure apx 800-950 bucks for gears and have them installed.

Ouch, that'd hurt the wallet, almost just be worth finding a 60 with the gears I want already in it...
I can get one of those already setup for like $250...

I have always wanted a dually... Just thought lifting it and putting bigger tires on it, it starts becoming more complicated, having to space it properly and crap.
