I dont think the ttb is junk. i think d44 is junk. I have thought many times about going to the local junk yard and getting a d50 ttb thats in a truck.

I dont wont to come off as o you got to do sas because ttb is weak. I dont really see where people come from when they same a ttb is that much better. It is the actually the chunk that is weak to me.

d44=junk
ttb=ok-i guess, i can say i have never had any problems out of my actual ttb system. the d44 is what i broke.

I think the easiest thing to do would be to sell the 2wd and go buy one thats already 4wd, or if your on a budget and want a cushy ride go buy an 88' and up chevy half ton, lol

Yeah, I actually posted a thread in the 73-7u9 forum a few weeks ago asking if the 2wd F100's can be converted over to TTB like the 80-96 F150's. That guy has some sweeeet fabrication skills. He runs those rigs in the desert.
To clarify, yes I'll be converting over to 4wd. I bought this 1995 F150 short wheelbase 2wd frame for $100. It's in great shape, with just some surface rust and NO rust holes! Pretty hard to find that kind of deal. For $100 I got a great frame including the complete front end includng all steering parts, the rear end which turns out to be a 3.55 LSD Ford 8.8, a driveshaft, sway bars front and rear, and it's also got dual fuel tanks. I've been searching for a decent shortbed 4x4 but $900 was the cheapest I found and it was a mess, and without a title.
I'm actually going to mount my 65 F350 body onto this frame and build a nice wooden flatbed for it. Eventually I'd like to find a 60's or 70's flareside bed and use that, but the wood flatbed will do for the time being.

I whipped this picture up copying and pasting from various pics in Microsoft Paint. The wheels are 16" 235/85R16's I stole from a pic of my '85...so they look really big on this truck. Just imagine some 31x10.50 Cooper Discoverer STT's.
When I was driving the truck in high school, the original engine jus wasn't up to par and really lacked in reliabilty. So I bought a remanufactured engine for it, so I'll be mounting my 1965 352 FE into this frame (stock, 208 HP rating), backed by a T19 close ratio 4 speed, with a BW 1356 transfer case. I'll be running just 31's so they won't add too much stress to the axle.
I realize a front locker might be un-necessary 95% of the time, but that mud on the farm is real nasty. It's not like I can get a running start and plow through it, I'm backing up to the compost pile and dumping the load. Then trying to start off going uphill...well it's no fun doing that in 3" of mud in the Spring when it's been raining. I've had to use tire chains on the Jeep before with open differentials... I just feel like all 4 tires would really help more than 1 front and 1 rear tire.
I've looked into selectable lockers, the OX is my favorite. But, the OX locker can't be used in the TTB since the shifter mechanism is actually built onto the new OX differential cover. So...since the truck will have on board air for work out in the field, I might as well plumb the lockers with ARB's is what my gut has led me to think.
I'm glad that picture was posted, it adds to my thinking plan if the D44 shows it's weak points... I can always build a sweet TTB off the truck and swap it in. Dana 50 with coil springs... If the farm abuse kills these 1/2 ton D44 and 8.8 axles, I'll upgrade to a Dana 50 and Ford 10.25. But that seems unlikely since I shouldn't have any issues with the stock axles.
As far as terrain goes, I'll be spending quite a bit of time out in the woods collecting firewood on the old abandoned logging roads. So I go down the hill, cross the stream, go up the hill, then get on the logging road that has tons of rocks and real deep ruts. Doing that with a truck full of firewood shouldn't be too much of an issue. I'd like to try the 4x4 truck pulls at the local fair in the fall. I intend to spend a lot of time on the pavement pulling the utility trailer full of equipment. But when it comes to work, it might be hauling tools and equipment up the mountain to fix equipment or pulling hay wagons. I don't see the D44 and 8.8 having any issues.
