To be honest I wasnt kidding. However I would hope if he/you tried it one would put down a cheap piece of plastic or a hunk of carpet whatever is available to despose of easly.
BUT, I gotta correct some wording used by others about this issue of cleaning the "CHROME" grill. Our grills are not chrome plated although I have seen some aftermarket "chrome" one available but I doubt your grill being that is old is chrome.
Our grill shells are anodized aluminum so "glidding" a razor blade across the finish WILL damage the finish on your shell.
Now if you were refering to your grill shell insert it could very well be one of the chrome plated versions but keep in mind they were plated over plastic and was not a high quality chrome.
I have to correct myself, I used stripper on my stainless trim on my panel not the inserts of the chrome plated grills of my 75 Truck, So Sorry if I miss led you.
I'm confused over this excitement. If it's chrome, it's not something Ford put on it. And LMC just recently started selling a chrome shell (who I'm not even that impressed with). So unless the PO dropped some coin to have his grille chromed, which I don't see why he would then paint it black, my guess is this 'holy grail' chrome grille shell is a piece of garbage...and not something to get too excited about.
^^^Yeah...more than likely and anodized unit. Still not necessarily something to get excited about if it's a china made piece of crap. Quick test...push your thumb in to it, if the material feels maleable, it's probably a $99 throw away shell. If not, you probably have an OEM or high quality $500+ aftermarket unit. Then you'll have to determine what condition the anodizing is in...my guess is since it was painted, it was ane expendable unit and the anodizing is cloudy and will need to be stripped, then polish the aluminum and spray with clear, re-anodize or polish it ever couple of weeks.
Hey just get some Greased Lightning an use on it an a micro fiber rag an it will come off so you won't scratch the crap out of it. It will take it off in no time an won't hurt the chrome you can use this stuff on Chrome an engines an everything with no problem.
Good points from a few about the grill being original verses chrome aftermarket.
It may be just a run of the mill aluminum grill that someone took the time to polish a nice shine into. Then decided they want to see what it looks like painted. Then realized they put way to much time into this stupid little part and none on tj maintenance of it. Then sold the truck! Haha!
