How do YOU fill up- engine running or off?

I have a couple of friends with diesels and they refuse to shut the engine when they fill up. According to them stopping and starting is unnecessary wear on parts and there is no hazard by filling while running. They get A LOT of complaints from gas pumpers but stand their ground (I won't go to the station with them anymore or I'll go inside cuz I'm not one for pointless confrontation).

What say you, FTE?

I shut off because I don't see much point in idling unnecessarily for 10 or 20 minutes while I fill-up. Diesel won't ignite like gasoline, but the fumes are highly flammable, and most people don't enjoy the smell of diesel exhaust which is much more pronounced than that of a gasser.

I have left her running maybe 4 or 5 times while refilling, but no one has ever complained to me about it.

Sounds like your buddies 1) have money to burn... literally, and 2) live where people are just itching for a fight 24/7. I see you're in Virginia; I'm originally from Maryland and I don't want to completely stereotype, but my experiences in VA were that too many people thought they were descendants of a Civil War hero or because they paid $800K+ for their house, that their way of thinking is "how it should be, and I'm going to prove it". Plenty of really good folk in VA, but the DC influence is making NoVA the land of ********$.

Kudos to you for walking away from the petty BS. I wish more people had your common sense and strength of character.

I always shut mine down.
They idea of unnecessary wear , I always thought was from dry starts.
Hence the idea of Prelube Starting systems for large diesel engines.
I don't believe that a warm engine will drain down enough to be a problem at fuel stops.
You have to admit our engines are noisy and smelly, so in consideration of others, I shut her down. Just my .02

If I'm on a trip pulling our 5'er I use the semi pumps at truck stops and never shut my engine down.If I'm at a regular gas station I always shut it down.

I shut mine off 99% of the time. If it's really cold and I want the truck warm I'll keep her running

Personally, I HATE the smell of an idling gasser. I actually like the smell of my diesel exhaust. The CCV not so much.... LOL But I personally shut mine down simply because I normally add DK and I prefer to have a "clean" mix ratio after I'm finished. Nothing to do with start up wear or anything else really. Diesels idle VERY efficiently compared to gassers, and I do leave it idle and unclip my key chain from the key in the ignition so I can lock it if I run into a convenience store or something. I don't think a few minutes of idling is that big of deal.

Is it posted on the dsl pumps to shut down or on the roof protection post? Is here..

Right or wrong, Necessary or not. Not worth the aggravation of someone giving me a hard time for not shutting down and definitely not worth getting a fine. They have cameras that read license plates.

I leave mine running. I've never had anyone say anything to me about it at the pump.

Everyone has thier own methods.
I always shut down, even at the truck stops when I'm filling the big tank.
The key to the locking gas cap is on my key ring and it's easier to just shut off and take the key ring with me than to try and detach it just to leave the engine running.

I always leave mine running. Where I'm at in Pa. the diesel pumps are off the side so it's never an issue .

Depends on outside temp at time of fill up. If it is really cold and I have my family with, I leave it run. Otherwise, I shut down.

Indiana winters... I leave it running... if I'm traveling on the interstate and stop for fuel I leave it running so the engine and turbo keep a steady temp... before I go back on the highway... But use your best judgement... I see police all the time with gas patrol cars never turn them off....

In winters up North even people with gas cars leave them running which to me is kinda nuts... cuz that can spark a fire more so than a these trucks...

Regards, Madog

I leave mine running sometimes. Don't know exactly why I do or don't. I guess I just think it's a lot of wear and tear on the electrical components.
Nobody has ever given me, even a dirty look.

I shut mine down. Only time that I don't is when I'm towing and we just slip into a fill up station and buzz out but that is very rare. Most of the time, the family needs to get out, pee, stretch their legs, etc so those stops last longer than me filling the tank.
