I've done this twice... we don't normally use this much feed, but first time we were trying to not have to make another run for awhile and the second time I was picking up for a friend. I love that trailer! This is in the mountains up in Northern VA off of I64. Not a bad drive!

...and hauled back this massive load. I had to work by poor truck to death but I made it.

The way that trailer is caved in, it looks like there was a massive load on it...

Not trying to criticize, but I never seen anyone strap over THE TOP of a car before. Would've been much safer, and no risk of damage if you strapped the frame instead.

Tell me about it. It was a rental trailer and had the crap beat out of it. Other then being caved in the center it was in good working shape (weld were good, main rails where straight, tires where in good shape).

That was the problem. There was so much rust it was a risk to use the frame alone. We did four straps over the car, which was in good shape on the top half, to compress the suspension and then a chain in the front and one in the rear to the most solid pieces of the car we could find on the bottom half. I stopped fairly often to check the straps to make sure but it road well and never bounced or moved a bit.
I wasn't a big fan of going over the car but if you seen the underneath it was better option. EDIT: Also keep in mind it's a unibody and there is no where to strap over the frame really. Also they didn't provide many hangers back in those days. Anywhere we could hook to was at risk of ripping do to rust so that is the main reason we went over the car. We had a few good place we used a chain front and rear but they were used to keep it from moving front to back.

It's a 1964. We thought about that running a strap from front to back as well but went with the four over the car and the two chains with ratchets at the front and back. In the pic the tires have air but that was because we aired it up before pulling it on the trailer. They went flat again in about an hour. The car had been basically sitting on the ground for three years so the underside was scary. It was almost to the point I didn't want to haul it but after getting the straps and chains on and going on a test drive it felt good. It was usually to do it that way but in the end the suspension was compressed and we had solid mounting points so I went with it.
